State of the Union Could Push Back “Lost”

January 7, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 9 Comments

The White House is considering presenting the annual State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 2.

“Lost” fans may recognize that date as the scheduled premiere for the sixth season of the island-based drama.

If the White House decides to go with Feb. 2, then it appears “Lost” would be moved back a week.

A campaign has begun to Twitter to protest the potential move.

Obama seems to go out of his way to make appearances on television, so I think they will go ahead and show the State of the Union on February 2nd. Really, I’d rather watch “Lost”.

It almost seems like they’re going out of their way to do it on February 2nd, just to piss off “Lost” fans.

WTF! That’s the last straw. I will not be voting for him again.

I personally find it ridiculous that people are getting so spun up about this. All politics aside, it’s very simple: Real-life matters take precedence over *any* fictional universe, *any* day of the week. I don’t care if, hypothetically, the exclusive never-to-be-seen-again one-night only game-changing episode of the highest rated series in world history is on the boob tube that night. You’ll find me watching something that pertains in real life that affects real people.

As far as I’m concerned, this #NoStateofUnionFeb2 campaign is nothing more than a clear representation of the state of our misguided priorities as a culture. I’m a politically neutral sci-fi geek, and it makes me sad to think that this may be our future.

It’s a television show. You’ve waited this long. One more week will not kill you. Why not take the time to get involved in the community you belong to in the real world?

Get some perspective people! If it is delayed a week, so what? This is more important than a TV show. I never liked Bush, but I watched the State of the Union address simply because of it’s importance, and also for respect for the Office of the Presidency. Also, Kyle, Is Obama the first president to deliver the State of the Union on TV or something in your alternate reality?

    Huh?

This the the State of the Union, not a state of emergency. And to answer your question – no. But I’ve never bothered to watch the State of the Union addresses in the first place. If I want to know anything about it, I can just look it up on the internet afterwards. I can’t do the same for “Lost”.

I mean, if they were talking about something really important, like an address following a major catastrophe, that would be one thing. I wouldn’t get so upset about it. But this is something they PLAN for.

Wait wait wait…. You’re saying that you *can’t* go online right after an episode of LOST and find out everything that happened?

I think Kyle means that if they don’t broadcast Lost, unlike the address, it won’t be repeated and analyzed in the newspapers, Nightly News shows, Current Affairs shows, Meet The Press, NPR, Jon Stewart, Colbert, etc. etc.

And if it’s a 2-hour episode, what show gets bumped next week to make room for it. Now you’ve got 2 shows off their original schedule.

Like I said, get some perspective! The SOTU address is much more important than a TV show. I’m a big fan of Lost, but one week is not going to make a huge difference. The alternate reality comment was about Kyle’s cheap shot saying Obama is on the TV all the time. I don’t want to have that debate here ( on a sci-fi site ), I just wanted to point out that Obama isn’t the first President to have the SOTU address televised. Are you seriously suggesting that the SOTU address should be re-scheduled for a TV show!!! The President obviously has more important things to worry about other than if the Lost season premiere is delayed one week. I just think it’s very sad that people’s priorities are so screwed up. Michael is right, why don’t you take the time to get involved in your community instead of whining about a TV show’s season premiere being delayed one week. Get your priorities straight.
