“Torchwood” Series 4 Will Run 13 Episodes

December 2, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 23 Comments

Here’s a bit of holiday cheer for “Torchwood” fans.

After seeing the third season cut to a five-episode, mini-series event, the upcoming fourth series will run 13 episodes according to actor John Barrowman.

“We are discussing the future of Torchwood, because most definitely Torchwood will come back to the BBC,” Barrowman said on a UK radio show. “We’re not sure when, because we have to sort out the logistics of the filming, and it’s already been said that it will be 13 episodes rather than five.”

So, is this good news or bad news?

While we do get more “Torchwood,” last year’s five-part series was an event and helped propel the series to newer heights of popularity.

Let us know what you think in the comments.

Does this foretell the return to earth of Captain Jack Harkness? God, I hope so.

Given that it’s Barrowman that’s talking about Torchwood’s return, I think it’s a safe bet Harness will be back. The real question is, given how depleted the cast is now, who will be joining the show?

Well if they really wanted to go on with the original cast (or as many of them as there were at the beginning of the third season), they could always go the Alternate Reality road.
As in: season 3 happened, but on some other reality Earth, and is a warning to the season 4 (real reality Earth) cast.

It all depends on how inventive the writers are.

Hmmm… Even thought ‘CoE’ hurt me pretty bad, I’m getting over it. If they can get the right mix of new cast/team members, I’ll be happy to go back to Torchwood. (My dream team is Martha, Lois, and Mickey. With an appearance or three by Captain John.) Whoever it is, they have to create interesting characters for them. I don’t think I could watch The Jack and Gwen Show.

Personally, I’d be fine with Jack, Martha, and Qwen on the team Add on three interesting characters who can play a huge rule in the series, and I am on board.

I say huge rule because Qwen has always been the least interesting charactrer to me.

I`m really glad there will be a 4th Season. But like most of the people out there, I`m not as thrilled at the possibility of new characters who might not be of interest. But then again, I`m always open to new developments to TORCHWOOD.

If I remember correctly, I think they mentioned that they will start anew. Since the Hub was destroyed and Captain Jack is very heartbroken about Ianto`s death, I don`t really know what to expect. Gwen, who supposedly is the most ‘human’ one, how is she going to cope with TORCHWOOD just being her and Jack?

Lois and Martha to the team doesn`t sound quite bad. I`d like to see Captain John`s return back to earth and spice up TORCHWOOD at the very least since my most favourite character – I`m sure you`ve guessed by now – Ianto will only appear if they DO have a flashback. Hmm… Will they defrost Gray?

*fingers crossed* I hope season 4 will be as EPIC as the other 3

Im very excited. Torchwood has improved with every season. As for the crew, Im not worried. Everyone questioned how 3rd series would work without Tosh and Owen, but (although I miss Tosh)… it was amazing.

Ianto is gone now too, and with 13 episodes, there are going to have to replace some crew.

Kicking out the given ideas: Lois was perfect and a must for the team.

I think Mickey (new an improved after becoming a little bit of a warrior on the alternate earth) could also make a worthy addition while still adding a bit of humor (much needed).

As for Martha, Im not sure… I kind of like her in UNIT. Its nice to have that part of the Who Universe reachable (although “on loan from UNIT” works too).

and of course, I trust that RTD can pluck out some new faces for us to fall in love with again as well.

I’m so pleased Torchwood is going in for a fourth series 🙂
In my opinion the new cast should consist of Captain Jack (obviously), Martha Jones (She brings real life to the show although with her involvement in Law and Order : UK i doubt she will be in it :), Mickey (Martha’s new found Husband – only one of the team if Martha isn’t, and Alonso – Jack’s new love interest 😉
    – ++ Louis Habiba would be pretty awesome as part of the team 🙂
    BUT NO GWEN!!!
She is the one who ruins the show :L

well, so far season one was my favorite (the most consistent. ) COE was creepy in a bad way. I like Gwen, captain Jack is pretty central obviously (although, it would be nice if they returned him to his original broad sexual orientation- and had him show some believable interest in women and other species, rather than predominately only men.)
Most importantly, I am bored with Davies’s dark writing lately and would love to have some fresh story-lines from new blood. Hats off to Davies though, for the brilliant Doctor Who reboot and Torchwood spin-off! Simply brilliant over all!
    Cheers, Jude

Where’s TW Going to go now? With Ianto, Tosh and Owen gone, Now Jack as well, whos knows what’ll happen.
But if you watched DW on new years, JACK WAS THERE!! And he was with Alonzo. And I Reckon Alonzo will join TW as well as Martha, Mickey (Which, may I say, are now married in the program) And Gwen, Rhys and of course their baby.
But in that episode of Doctor Who, I was almost positive The Doctor would have saved Ianto. ='( I got all exited too.
But I’m sure the next Season of TW will be better than the rest… Maybe…

great news – I have enjoyed all three seasons. I thought COE was fantastic and very brave of the writers. Season 4 could pick -up in the future , some of the radio narratives give suggestions of this or storylines that could be expanded- like asylum
They could also bring owen back pretty easily – remember he was already dead – so even though his body was completely destroyed , he could be some kind of concious being. what do you think too silly???

Cant wait for Torchwood 4! …….Gwen’s baby is a boy and Jack is the father!!! How and when….that could be revealed in T4. This will keep the connection between the two characters….
Through fast track time scale and gene mutation, the baby has a fast growth spur and develops into a young man who fights alongside his mum and dad!! Just an idea!

As much as I love Torchwood and John Barrowman, they have lost one too many my other favourite Ianto.

RTD seems to have written out three of the four chararacters that are liked best. No one I know likes Gwen but she seems to be hanging in. Most of the comments that I read when they were showing series 2 and afterwards before the storyline for series 3 was finalised stated that fans felt that Gwen should be the next to go and let Jack have the relationship he really wants/needs. You could tell that RTD was leaving and did not seem to care about the viewers which he needs as the viewing figures are what is needed for future series.

If people are saying that someone could come back why not Ianto as the last thing that happened was Jack to kiss Ianto and for those of you who saw Series 1 Ep 4 know that Jack can bring someone back to life with a kiss, it was Ianto then too. the idea of the baby being Jack’s is yukky on all levels and disrespectful to Rhys.

Sorry about the rant but I have needed to say this since COE Day 4.

Whats wrong with Gwen, Eve Myles is very attractive and adds a different side to the show are you gay or something. I think that they shoulden’t bring back Tosh or Ianto because of the way they died, it would be strange if they did but I think adding Captain John to the team would be a great idea and possibly bringing Owen and Alonso back to the team as well. That would be a good team Jack, John, Owen, Alonso and gwen.

I am losing interest looking at nr. 2 coming to an end. Found out and saw on Utube that Gwen is pregnant with Rhys child and Jack left the building so to say. I miss the amazing chemistry between Jack and Gwen and the way Jack plays both sides. If there will be a nr. 4 I will try to catch up by seeing nr. 3 when it comes, but still a little disappointed that they didn’t put in a love scene with Jack and Gwen, they could have had it as a dream sequence that both of them have with the question why? . It’s mostly Ianto and Jack now. Now through clips found out that Ianto dies and that’s sad. Maybe Rhys is not the father, now that tickles ones imagination. So hope for the best and back to science channels.

    Gwen
Rhys -> who stepped up as a defacto member of Torchwood in CoE

I think the last Doctor showed us the rest of the series 4 cast in his final episode.

Martha Jones and Mickey were shown hunting an alien – probably as Torchwood members in a future in which they are married.

    And of course Captain Jack

and Alonso – the former titanic crewmember who I’m guessing would be the new Tosh and Ianto.

So happy there’s going to be a fourth series!!! Martha, Lois, Jack (who is officially coming back!), Gwen, and Alonso would be my dream team for series 4 and since the show has consistently gotten better since series 1, I definitely have high expectations for 4 when it finally comes back. I watched COE before the first 2 series so it made it a little hard to get through series 1 but series 2 was pretty amazing so I had no trouble knocking that out in two days lol but nothing can touch COE imho. COE made me realize what I was missing after being a long time DW fan. Can’t wait for 4! I was worried for a little while it wasn’t gonna be renewed, which would be ridiculous considering how awesome COE was!
