“Stargate: Universe” Season One Split for DVD Release

September 29, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 14 Comments

Following the tradition of previous entries in the franchise, the first season of “Stargate: Universe” will air in two halves.

The first half kicks off this Friday at 9 p.m. EST on SyFY. The second half will return at some point in 2010, according to SyFy.

The model is nothing new for the network. However, when it came to the DVDs, fans were made to wait until the full season aired before the episodes were released.

Not so for “Stargate: Universe.”

Gateworld reports that the season will be split into two halves when its released on DVD.

“Stargate Universe has been tons of fun so far in the first half,” DVD Special Features Producer Ivon Bartok told Gateworld. “And this year what we’re doing is a little bit different. As far as I know, we’re going to be doing volume one and two DVDs.”

It seems the plan is to release the first ten episodes as Volume One, together with a sizeable amount of special features, and then release the back ten episodes as Volume Two, presumably after the episodes air on SyFy in 2010.

I guess they are taking the BSG route and screwing fans by releasing HALF seasons on DVD, just so they can grab a few more bucks. Because I know that when BSG came out those half-season box sets sure were not half priced!

If I can’t buy the entire season for 20 bucks, I’m not buying. I have all 10 seasons of SG1 and the first four of Atlantis, all for 20 or less.

Looks like I won’t be adding SGU to my collection.

No way. The only way I’m going to buy this is if they make each individual episode on its own DVD……Maybe sometime in the near future, they’ll be able to figure out how to split them by commercial break as well.

::grrrr:: Why must they do this to us? I hate half-season sets. I’d much rather wait for the full season to air. I’ve been doing it for the Stargate franchise for the better part of a decade. It’s worked just fine so far.

And, uh, Brian? If you’d read the bit after that quote, you’d noticed that it was said by the Special Features producer. He works on the show. He watches them filming. He’s seen the first half of the season because it’s part of his job.

Man! SGU just rocks. It’s the best Stargate ever. It’s 1000 times better than sg1 and sga. And I like sg1 and sga…

oh, and this releasing half seasons on dvd, well that’s crap. But our mighty unhuman turbokapitalism RULES, as it seems. And our bluegreen earth is dying!

    Just f*** ’em all!

But what can we do? If we want these dvds, we’ve to buy it!
So here’s your penny 😉 Penny dropped???

Peronally i think it can be a pain in the ars too but from what i’ve heard SG/MGM are having trouble keeping their monies up so i’d buy them both anyway for that little extra for the simple fact that i’d be supporting the stargate shows

Why does everyone think they can get something for nothing and the folks they are getting it from will go along with it? The franchise needs to make money or there is no series and by the way with two volumes I don’t have to wait so long to get to see at least part of the season. I don’t watch anything on TV so DVDs are my lifeline and this Stargate Universe is really great. SG1 was great and Atlantis a new twist and great and Universe another new twist which makes it fascinating. Stargate keeps getting better! Keep entertaining me and I do not begrudge the franchise for making money otherwise why would they want to bother?

I would have no problem with them putting out a half-season, if it *cost* half the price. Currently, you’ll pay $50 for a full season, and $40 for a half-season. That seem right to you?

It cost me $38.99 plus $2.98 shipping for a total cost of $41.97 and for that price I can watch more than once a Blu-Ray presentation any time I want – if I like something I am willing to pay for it and that is what money is for to use on things that one needs and that one enjoys – of course if you can’t afford it or don’t really think the series is all that great then one should not buy it, but if one does enjoy it and can afford it then why not? – under the circumstances I feel that for me it is worth it and I feel I am supporting in some small way the continuation of what I consider to be a great series (I would like to see it develop and grow for at least another 5 years). All lot of great shows have been cancelled because of money issues alone. Justice and rightness concerning price, especially when only a few dollars at stake, is not issue with me – I am not on a crusade I only want to be entertained and for me the price is acceptable (I would like, same as everybody else, a lower price or even to get a donation but…..!?).

I have also noticed that criticisms of the series have been colored by the price. Cost of DVDS should not figure into an evaluation of the creative/artistry/story line of the series which I have seen color opinions with some of the critics and in forums out there.

I don’t understand how so many sg units and other cultures can step through that stargate looking and pointing there guns in a forward position only and never be prepared for heavy casualities from smart cultures that understand what the stargate is so thay use the front of the stargate as a cell, trap or slaughter room and the back of the stargate as an ambush doorway when the vortex collapses. Tilopa or sg promoter or producer or whom ever you are. If a product is good and marketing does there job a franchise will sell. Many times, more money comes from market items and network contracts. So lets call greed what it is; and lets not chastise the fans that spend there hard earned dollars to purchase and not pirate the various sg series packages. I own ever Episode and series to date excluding sgu. I promise this, I shall not spend any more dollars if the creaters and marketers forget there fans and jack the prices of the volumes or double charge for one season.
