The Christopher Nolan Batman flick “The Dark Knight” may have slipped to number two in U.S. box office after staying number one for a full month, but overseas the Caped Crusader has regained the throne and stands tall as the box-office lead.
The film was number one for several weeks in those markets until the release of the Brendan Fraser-Jet Li action-adventure film “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” That film immediately erased Knight’s reign once it hit the Asian market where “Mummy” has done exceptionally well as was expected. However, after a two week lead, “Mummy” has been usurped by the re-emergence of what seems to be the unstoppable force of the Christian Bale (Batman), Heath Ledger (The Joker) and Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face) trifecta.
“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” now sits securely in second place.
Warner Bros.’ CG-animated “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” didn’t fare as well as was expected overseas. It opened in third place in the U.S. but was sporadic in overseas markets. It opened at No. 6 in the U.K., No. 2 in Mexico and No. 4 in Australia.
“The Dark Knight’s” premieres in France, Spain and Russia this past weekend helped the film move back into the top position.
