Batman MMOG to be Unveiled at Comic Con

Batman MMOG to be Unveiled at Comic Con

July 24, 2008 By Sam Sloan Leave a Comment

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and DC Comics will present the world’s first licensed massively multiplayer online Batman comic book game at this weekend’s San Diego Comic Con which kicks off Thursday, July 24. The unveiling event is being touted as “DC Universe Online.”

John Blakely, vice president of development SOE Austin, told Reuters that “DC Universe Online” offers physics-based combat action never seen before in a MMOG.

“When you pick up a bus and throw it across Metropolis, hundreds of thousands of players will be able to see this-and many of them will have to dodge this projectile for their safety,” said Blakely.

This massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) will allow its players to create their own superhero or super villain and team-up with such iconic DC Comics characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Or, if your bent is toward the dark side then you can join the forces of evil with the likes of The Joker, Bizzaro, Brainiac, Two Face or Lex Luthor, just to name a few.

“Comics dominate the pop culture landscape today,” said comic book legendary artist Jim Lee, executive creative director of ‘DC Universe Online.’ “As comic fans, we’ve known since we were little kids how great comics are. With this game, we have the opportunity to show everyone else how cool the DC Universe is.”

“We’ll coordinate things across print and online,” added Lee. “If we have a big storyline happening in the summer, you might see that in the game later. I have a staff position at DC and we have a short list of characters that we’ll update first in the game and then in the comics.”

The release of the game at this years Comic Con was uniquely timed to coincide with the just released blockbuster film “The Dark Knight” and hopes to build on all the recent hype over the upcoming “Justice League” film and the next big Superman release titled “Superman: Man of Steel” from director Bryan Singer.

“The biggest fantasy players can have is to be an equal of Superman, not necessarily to play as Superman,” said Chris Cao, studio creative director at SOE Austin. “Players can aspire to one day join with the Justice League of America in the Watch Tower or the Legion of Doom in the Hall of Doom.”
