16-year old “Spiderwick Chronicles” star Freddie Highmore will lend his voice the lead character in 3-D animation “Astro Boy.”
Set in futuristic Metro City, “AstroBoy” tells the story of a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Never fully meeting up to his creator/father’s expectations, he embarks on a journey in search of and identity, mutual acceptance. On his quest he experiences betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before coming into his own and returning to save Metro City, reconciling with the father who had rejected him.
Directed by David Bowers, the lonely robot tale is a $50 million adaptation of a classic comic-book story created by manga supremo Osamu Tezuka that is in production with Hong Kong-based Imagi Studios.
AstroBoy is scheduled for worldwide release in 2009 from Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company.
