Well known columnist for Variety, Anne Thompson let go a bomb shell today by stating that it is “highly unlikely” that Bryan Singer will be directing the next Superman film.
Singer is just now putting the finishing touches on his Tom Cruise Nazi flick “Valkyrie” and setting up pre-production for “The Mayor of Castro Street.”
Singer, none-too-happy about all the stalling for his next Superman film, made his feelings known about the follow-up to “Superman Returns” being put on the slow track in favor of a more youth-oriented “Justice League” movie. Since it too has been placed on-hold until a resolution of the writer’s strike, it is beginning to look like the next Brandon Routh Superman film could be a long way off.

Why is it they can make awesome Batman movies, but struggle with a Superman movie?
Dana says
Richard Donnor and Christopher Reeve set the benchmark standard for superhero films 30 years ago. It’s a daunting task to follow up that legacy, especially if you’re just playing copycat and aren’t trying to bring a unique new vision to the franchise.
I doubt it will happen, but perhaps Warner Bros should just pull the plug on the Routh films, and let Tom Welling take the character from “Smallville” to the big screen, showing Clark Kent finally making the transition into Superman (that’s assuming that Welling hasn’t already had enough of the role by now).
Kyle Nin says
Now they’re saying the same thing about Brandon Routh. Chances for a sequel are starting to seem impossible.
Dennis says
I totally agree with Dana… Superman Returns is supposed to be a continuation after Superman II. It felt nothing like that at all… So pull the plug on Routh and have Smallville make the natural transition to the big screen.
Its the best thing to do!
Spork says
A fitting reward to Singer for such a lousy film. The first half of this “sequel” was a retelling of the first half of the first movie. Superman’s origins.
Why?
The second half was the weak sequel that had Supes super-date-raping an under-18 Lois. She’s 22 in the film, five years after Superman’s departure, and she has a kid with powers. Five from 22 is 17, people. Singer made Superman a rapist. Wonderful film making and a fine example of the craft of storytelling, right there.

YAY!
Hopefully by getting rid of Singer, we’ll have a Superman movie that’s actually worth watching. Superman Returns had great special effects but besides that, the movie was terrible. It seemed more like a bad homage to the 70’s flicks than a “new” Superman movie.
I hope they reboot it like they’re doing with the Hulk.
