Is Superman Changing?

Is Superman Changing?

July 10, 2013 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

Warning:  This article will have SPOILERS for Man of Steel and the Justice League #22.  If you don’t want to know details, please stop reading here.

Superman may shedding his nice guy image.

The latest issue of Justice League features a storyline that takes a page from the recently released Man of Steel.

In the film, Superman kills someone.  The move has sparked some controversy among fans and even was one that DC heads were initially against says screenwriter David Goyer.

But it appears that some of the creative team at DC are getting more on board with the idea of Superman killing someone.   In the latest issue, which hits stands today, Superman  kills a new hero, Dr. Light.

Superman does indeed take a life. It is in the next issue of Justice League. It is not of his own volition. Apparently the Man of Steel is being controlled by someone else and it’s part of a plot to frame Superman.

Not exactly a new plotline, but the fact that Superman is killing someone twice in one summer could raise a few eyebrows.

Could this be opening up future plotlines in which the Man of Steel breaks his code of not killing his foes?

    SPOILER ALERT!

He obviously already broken that “code.” They always say the 1st is the hardest but it gets easier from the 2nd onward. The big S has done the 1st, there will be no turning back for him now as he spends forever justifying his killing actions – hmmmm, he truly has become just like us.

So now that Supes has tasted blood what’s to stop him from delivering a junk punch that would send the next villain into high Earth orbit?

Well if he’s possessed and isn’t operating under his own free will, it doesn’t count. Superman is merely a puppet being controlled and not the one doing the killing.

That said, ‘Man of Steel’ is *NOT* the first time Superman killed Zod. It happened in the comics, too. Way back in 1988 when John Byrne was writing Superman. Superman killed Zod in 1988’s ‘Superman # 22’.

Some have said that Superman also killed Zod in Superman II, but this is false. he did not. In Superman II, the last we see of Zod is him falling into a cavern in the Fortress of Solitude. This was never meant to indicate that Zod was dead! A scene was shot and filmed where Lex, and all three de-powered Kryptonians were seen being arrested and taken to prison. This scene was cut from the final film, but did air on ABC TV.

With great power comes great responsibility.
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The dark side is not more powerful, but it is more seductive.
The boy scout has lost his virginity, folks.

Look for a downward trend, hitting rock bottom, and eventually a storyline either redeeming him or showing him falling into the role of a dark-god demanding worship.
