Stephen King Sends a Chilling Message to Filmgoers About Ending of “The Mist”

November 13, 2007 By Sam Sloan 11 Comments

Stephen King loves “The Mist” – A film adaptation of his novella by acclaimed director Frank Darabont

At a press conference yesterday for the highly anticipated film “THE MIST” by Academy Award nominated director Frank Darabont (“The Green Mile,” “The Shawshank Redemption”), Stephen King, whose novella the film is based on, gave his blessing of the film adaptation as well as sent out a chilling message to anyone who dares to give away the film’s ending. Stephen King stated, “Frank wrote a new ending that I loved. It is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.”

About “THE MIST”

mist.jpgDavid Drayton and his young son Billy are among a large group of terrified towns people trapped in a local grocery store by a strange, otherworldly mist. David is the first to realize that there are things lurking in the mist…deadly, horrifying things…creatures not of this world. Survival depends on everybody in the store pulling together…but is that possible, given human nature? As reason crumbles in the face of fear and panic, David begins to wonder what terrifies him more: the monsters in the mist — or the ones inside the store, the human kind, the people that until now had been his friends and neighbors?

In this legendary tale of terror from master storyteller Stephen King, the thin veneer of civilization is stripped away, the masks are discarded, and the true horror is revealed as us. Written and directed by Frank Darabont, “THE MIST” stars Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher, Laurie Holden, Toby Jones, William Sadler, Frances Sternhagen, and Jeffrey DeMunn. Frank Darabont and LizGlotzer served as producers. Dimension Films’ is distributing the film in the U.S. by Metro Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM).

Dang! Well, that’s a ringing endorsement of a screenwriters work if I ever heard one.
I read The Mist. I wonder if it’s a different ending from the original story?
    Hmmmmm……

I just read versions of the same spoiler on two websites. If its true, the movie ending doesnt make any sense at all – considering a few things that were established earlier in the story/movie. Its just flat out dumb. Ill post back after I see it wednesday.

If its true I think theyll put the original ending back in for the DVD release. (2 sales that way)

The ending sucked; movie was otherwise great. When their vehicle stops near the end I’d recommend that anyone who liked the original story quickly leave the theatre – and make up your own ending – Darabonte’s ending is cheap and trivial and kind of lame.

I had twenty years in my own mind to make up an ending since I first read the story and nothing I came up with was as stupid and bleak as what Darabonte supplied us with.

Apparently those of you who have seen the ending didn’t understand the emotional impact that it had. I can’t understand why people are upset that it was changed, but King himself said he liked it. I think the twist portrayed in this was appropriate. Personally, I thought it was a great ending to the movie. I haven’t read the novella yet, but I did order it from Amazon.

It sucked, it was shocking just to be shocking. It contradicted the whole movie and was just sickening. You can’t say that if that was you in that situation that you wouldn’t wait more than 5 Seconds before making such a drastic decision. I’m not saying it had to be a “happy” ending but please give us some credit make it a little believable. I was pissed at the ending of the short story but compared to this pile of crap…..

The ending was good. Shocking and all. Yes it was a messed up situation but the purpose was to shock. If you don’t see it that way then that’s the lame you. But people with brains will appreciate the irony.

If you’re like me (and I know I am!…;) you are one of the viewers/fans of the original novella that really disliked Darabonts ‘ending’…but fear not, a Fan Edit is on the way to pay homage to the original novella ending!
Once the film is officially released to DVD, there will soon after be a Fan Edit version available called ‘The Novella Cut’…to see a test version of this new ending, please check out…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKiWkG3397c ….. and email me at kkarstens@cableone.net with your opinions…thanks!…

the ending was great and shocking, but a little bit illogical, Drayton(the Protagonist) portrayed as a positive, optimistic person in the ENTIRE movie, so why in the end he SUDDENLY feeling blue and kill everyone?

The whole film is crap really, the ending doubly so. but I suppose that if fear is an illogical feeling and usually based on nothing sensible at all, a mediocre horror film must be something similar…
