BREAKING NEWS: Simon Pegg Is Scotty

October 12, 2007 By S. K. Sloan 6 Comments

Paramount Pictures has just announced that “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun of the Dead” actor Simon Pegg is the new Montgomery “Scotty” Scott for the J.J. Abrams re-imaging of “Star Trek.”

pegg_simon.jpgPegg joins Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana and Anton Yelchin for the next film to be based of the classic Trek series.

We can also confirm that Chris Pine has been offered the role of Kirk, but he has yet to accept as he is weighing his options between doing the Trek film or working with George Clooney on a project that will be filming at the same time “Star Trek” is in production.

If Pine takes the role of Kirk that will leave only one major part un-cast, that of Sulu, made famous by actor George Takei.

Also announced is that the guy who’s name I forget from “Harold and Kumar” (the one who played Harold) will be playing Sulu. See IGN for more details.

What about Leonard McCoy? He isn’t still cast.

And Bronzethumb is right, John Cho is cast as the new Sulu.

Correct. I forgot about the actor not being cast yet for McCoy. Strong rumor still has Gary Sinise as the primary candidate for the country doctor.

John Cho is also strongly “rumored” to have landed the role but no official word has come from Paramount, Abrams, Kurtzman or Orci yet. John Kyson Lee is also strongly favored in the rumor pool for Sulu’s spot at the helm.

Since we are now getting down to the wire (shooting begin in less than month) – I will wait until official word comes down on these last two roles before reporting it.

Does anyone else feel like they’re casting the new Star Trek movie as if they were going to film a goofy teen comedy?

(Don’t get me wrong, I think casting Pegg was brilliant.)

I like Simon Pegg but I can’t really see him as Scotty. Gary Sinise would make an excellent Dr. McCoy but I think he is too old to play a young Bones.

I think he’ll be a great Scotty, but he needs to go to the Doohan website and get a dilithium crystal for more power.
