Warner Bros. has signed on director and video game veteran Jerry O’Flaherty to lead the way for its CGI-animated big screen feature of “Thundercast.” according to Variety. O’Flaherty is best known for his work on the vidgames “Command and Conquer,” “Gears of War” and “Unreal Tournament 3.” This will be his first major film project.
“It feels like a natural thing for me to step into,” O’Flaherty said in a press statement. “Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience.”
When the announcement was first made by the studio months ago that the popular characters from the 1980’s TV cartoon show would make their big screen debut, fans were told it would be a live-action movie, however, WB has since corrected that first mis-report and made known that this film will be all CGI-animation, with the intent of acquiring some pretty well-known actors to voice the characters.
The Paul Sopocy and O’Flaherty script centers on the humanoid cats who are forced to flee their destroyed planet of Thundera. They crash on a planet they call Third Earth, where they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer bent on killing them off. O’Flaherty says that he will try, as much as filmmaking will allow, to remain faithful to the original “Thundercats” franchise.
Warner Bros., which still owns all the rights to the franchise will distribute the finished film. The film is expected in theaters sometime in 2010.
