The New Full-time Doctor Who Companion Named

July 4, 2007 By Sam Sloan 15 Comments

Catherine Tate accepts proposal to star in fourth series

This bit of news comes hot of the press direct from the BBC. Here is what they had to say —

doctor_donna2.jpgCatherine Tate is set to return to the TARDIS for the complete 13 week run of Series Four of Doctor Who.

Award winning comedian Tate will reprise her role as Donna, the runaway bride from last year’s Christmas special, despite turning down the Doctor’s invitation to travel with him at the end of that adventure.

When Catherine was asked if she would like to become The Doctor’s new companion at the press screening of The Runaway Bride, she replied, “I would love to, but no one has asked!” Well, now they have.

Freema Agyeman who has played Martha Jones, The Doctor’s companion throughout the critically acclaimed third series, will return to the show to join The Doctor and Donna mid series.

I second that, donna as just annoying and that was her role.

The BBC execs have in fact been taken over by the master and this is the only way he knows how to destroy the doctor. “Insert evil laugh and cat stroking as appropriate”

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Really, it’s the only comment possible! God, that Tate woman is annoying. I can’t imagine being forced to watch her for a whole season. This could actually forcibly push me away from Who… ๐Ÿ™

This does not come as the greatest bit of Doctor Who news. Not by a long shot. But I have been shown repeatedly wrong by the end result in the show. So the producers have earned a bit of leeway from me, and I’ll wait and see.

This has got to be a joke, right? Can my day get any worse… First I fail my driving test, and now this!

    I might have to give series 4 a miss…

Bringing up Bonnie Langford as a way to make this seem like a good idea is NOT going to win me over.

    Mel = WORST…COMPANION….EVER.

Part of it was that Langford was woefully miscast…she’s a talented woman, but she was shoved into a role that was horribly underwritten and underdeveloped.

I don’t understand why they would do this. She was painful to have to deal with in the special, but that’s blissfully brief compared to an entire season. I’m with Mark up there—it’s got to be the Master, or someone else intent on ruining the series. I do understand Luke as well: I initially found some things in the new series a little uncomfortable that later I grew to like, but this would not be one of those things. I’ve already had the experience of watching her interact, as an actor and a character, with the Doctor, and it’s bad news all the way. I’m really sad to see them trashing at least an entire series this way. Especially after such a phenomenal 3rd this year!

I liked her well enough in The Runaway Bride, but for a whole season? that’ll take some adjusting.

Catherine had her moments in Runaway Bride. In the beginning I felt much the same about Billie Piper as many of you have voiced here about Catherine, but over time I feel in love with Billie as Rose and really was upset that she wanted to leave the show.

I like Freeman too, but feel she would fit best on a show like Torchwood than Doctor Who. Give Catherine time next season..I think, like Billie, she will grow on all of us and end up becoming one of the better Who companions…after all, she hit the nail on the head in Runaway Bride by telling the Doctor he should never be a alone because he needs somebody there to stop him from time to time, and I think Catherine’s character has the metal for that kind of task.

At first I was thinking NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO but then I thought that I felt the same about Billie so maybe she’ll suprise us you never know.

I liked her in the xmas special but that is totaly different to doing a whole season. I’m sorry to say that I think she has been type cast and Lauren, that name is gonna follow her around for the rest of her like. poor kid

any way final verdict (god I hate saying this but) give her a chance to fill out her character, miricals can happen. And good luck to her! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think im one of the few who literally jumped for joy when I heard this news. While I hated the character of Donna when she first appeared, her final scenes with the Doctor were (in my opinion) a joy to watch. As we,did with Bille Piper, I think we should all give her a shot and hopefully she will dazzle us!
