Remastered episodes of “Star Trek: The Original Series” are pacing upwards after a slow start back in September of last year. The latest data shows the “The Corbomite Maneuver” registered a a 1.6 household rating, marking a season high for the series.
The show is currently averaging a 1.3 household rating, just slightly below what “Star Trek: Enterprise” averaged in its first and only season in off-network broadcast syndication last year (1.4, with a peak of 1.7). However the show is following a similar pattern as Enterprise did and the recent 1.6 rating is the first time Star Trek has registered a stronger rating than Enterprise (see chart below for a detailed view). For the week of December 11 Star Trek was the second highest rated program in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Syndication category behind the 1.9 of Alias (ahead of Smallville – 1.4, Stargate SG-1 -1.3, Stargate Atlantis – 1.2, Farscape – 0.7 and The Outer Limits – 0.6).

Can anyone explain to me why they look no different to previously broadcast versions?
Is it me or are they simply digitally-transferred with no attempt to clean or do anything else to them. At least the few I’ve seen haven’t warranted the “digitally remastered” monika and seem to have made the defects look worse (I’m writing about the ones broadcast in the UK).

If you are watching them on TV Land then you are not seeing the remastered version. The CW Network (old WB & UPN) is showing the remastered versions of classic Trek. Not sure which you’re seeing in the U.K.

I’m seeing them in the Sci-Fi channel via Sky and the program information states “digitally remastered” – grains, hairs, blemishes and all!

The remastered episodes that are talked about in this article are the ones with the updated special effects. They’ve been airing since September 2006.
BTW, they’re starting back with “new” episodes tomorrow. “Friday’s Child” is the episode. And next week will be “Wink of an Eye”.

If you aren’t seeing any difference, then you aren’t seeing the re-mastered versions. There is a very noticeable difference depending on the scene. I suggest you link to:

Paste that into your web browser and take a look at some side by side comparisons. I think you will agree that the work being done on this restoration is simply awesome!

I’ve not seen the remastered episodes on tv here in the uk but they are available for download via the file sharing networks.
On the whole I think they’ve done a fantastic job with one notable exeption. Each episode seems to have been shortened by 7 minutes! This has obviously been done to fit in with modern advertising schedules, a mistake and a wasted opportunity. The new fx look fantastic and have been carefully done to compliment and not detract from the original scenes but axing 7 minutes of footage has seriously damaged the pace and tension of the episodes.
In my opinion TOS shows were perfectly paced and on the whole well directed. If anything it would have been nice to see each show made a little longer, imagine how a few extra seconds of battle footage here and there could have improved things. Ah well, maybe for the dvd release?

I’ve watched all the remastered shows so far.. They did an awesome job of breathing new life into an old series. The Doomsday Machine was incredible. Great job with the space scenes. I can not wait to see the others.

The ratings would be better if they showed them at a time other than the middle of the night. I watch them but on CW network here they cut minute bits and pieces out of the episode in order to make more time for the adult ads. I wish they would st least try to show the episodes when more people are awake.
The Remastered episodes ROCK! I fell in love with “The Doomsday Machine” all over again…
