“Heroes” Tearing Up the Ratings

November 15, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 10 Comments

The NBC peacock has got to be fluttering its feathers in all their grandeur after the Nielsens came out on Tuesday. For the first time, in a very long time, the network that once owned television with hits like Johnny Carson’s the “Tonight Show,” “Cosby” and “Seinfeld” has a new show that is a ratings gobbler.

The new SF series “Heroes” set a new series high, with 15.01 million viewers making it a real competitor by coming within a scant million viewers of ABC’s comedy king of the Monday night hill “Two and a Half Men,” starring Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer.

Since “Heroes” first aired its pilot episode the show has consistently rated 14-plus million viewers every Monday night, making this past Monday’s episode the highest rated so far for the series about people scattered across the planet that have mysteriously evolved certain special abilities and the super-villain that is out to destroy them all.

I’m just wondering how well it will do when “24” comes back in January. It’s in the same timeslot, isn’t it?

Two and a Half men airs on CBS not ABC.

Yeah, it is in the same timeslot as 24, it should be an interesting matchup. Several forums that I post on are already discussing that matchup and a good number of people are saying they’re gonna stick with Heroes because they prefer watching 24 one ep right after the other.

It never minds me when something is on since I DVR everything and watch it later. The only thing I watch when it is actually on is SCI FI Fridays on the SCI FI Channel.

Hopefully the Sci-Fi Channel will keep showing “Heroes” on Fridays. Then I can watch both shows. That’s what I did when “Vanished” was on Mondays.

For me it’s a non-issue since I watch the Friday re-play on Sci-Fi Channel anyway. I’ll be taping 24 and CSI Miami on Mondays like I have been for the past three years.

Has anyone seen the numbers for the Sci-Fi and iTunes
showings. That would be interesting. If the numbers are
good enough, maybe NBC will do a “multiple release” with
more current season shows (ie. Law and Order) If it works
for them, you know the other networks will jump on the
    cable/internet release bandwagon….

I think Sci Fi showed Heroes on Monday as well, because I remember seeing a listing for 7pm this past Monday.

SciFi Channel has been airing the previous week’s Heroes ep before the new ep airs on NBC.

    Brilliant scheduling move, I think.

The other side of that is how many viewers would it gain if Monday Night Football wasn’t on? So come January I think we’ll see some dynamic changes in the ratings for Monday nights. Let’s hope it does well.
