Murphy to pen drama pilot for cabler
Family is getting into bed with “Desperate Housewives” scribe Kevin Murphy for a one-hour drama about a mom who sacrifices her identity to save her daughter. Cable network has greenlit production on Murphy’s series pilot “Nobody,” based on the comicbook of the same name created by Alex Amado, Sharon Cho and Charlie Adlard.
Murphy will pen the pilot with Noreen Halpern, John Morayniss, Jason Netter and Ken Levin attached to exec produce. Blueprint Entertainment will produce for ABC Family.
“Nobody” revolves around a woman, Jessica Drake, who exchanges her life as she knows it to save her daughter’s, only to discover the price of cheating fate is being erased from the memories of her family and the world at large. Jessica winds up working for a covert ops branch of Heaven dedicated to protecting mankind from evil as a body without an identity, a “nobody.”
Through the use of her newfound powers — she can take on the forms of other people — Jessica manages to carry out her work, while making sure her family is safe from harm.
ABC Family senior VP of original series/programming Kate Juergens said the show would center on the mother-daughter relationship.
“Because she can take on other appearances, Jessica is still able to be a mother to her 15-year-old daughter, only at arm’s length,” Juergens said. “It’s sort of ‘Gilmore Girls’ meets ‘Kill Bill,’ because while she isn’t being maternal, she’s an avenger out kicking ass.”
Juergens said she’ll order another drama pilot before the end of the year in consideration for 2007. Production on “Nobody” begins next month and casting is under way.
ABC Family is still considering a pair of comedy pilots, “The Other Mall” (Daily Variety, April 4) and animated project “Slacker Cats,” for next year.
Endeavor-repped Murphy is co-exec producer on “Desperate Housewives.” His credits include Showtime’s “Reefer Madness” and the series “Ed” and “Jack & Jill.”
