In response to the breaking news, SCI FI Channel has issued a statement confirming that the cable network has not renewed Stargate SG-1 for an eleventh year.
Here is the network’s statement:
“SCI FI Channel is proud to be the network that brought Stargate SG-1 to its record-breaking 10th season. Ten seasons and 215 episodes is an astounding, Guinness World Record-setting accomplishment. Stargate is a worldwide phenomenon. Having achieved so much over the course of the past 10 years, SCI FI believes that the time is right to make this season their last on the channel. SCI FI is honored to have been part of the Stargate legacy for five years, and we look forward to continuing to explore the Stargate universe with our partners at MGM through a new season of Stargate Atlantis.”
The cancellation “was not a ratings-driven decision” (still racking up a solid 1.13 million adults 25-54 and 1.02 million adults 18-49 during the last eight weeks), said Mark Stern, exec VP of original programming for the SCI FI Channel. “We’re actually going out on a high note,” he said, as the network has given the production staff enough time to usher the series to a conclusion tying up all the loose ends. Stern said SCI FI plans to use some of the cast members of “SG-1” on the successful “Stargate: Atlantis” sequel, now in its third season and still going strong.
We have lived to see the close of another era of quality television.
Keith L. Dick says
Oh Well…
Hopefully the New Movie will be good…
Tom Boucher says
The Ori needed more than the rest of this season to be delt with, they can’t go from ‘all powerful’ to ‘wipe em out in a few more episodes’
How disappointing. I thought Ben Browder and Claudia Black had given it a much needed injection of new blood and it was going in new and entertaining directions.
Hope those two aren’t the kiss of death for a show, first Farscape, and now this.
Magess says
If they wind up the show in a good way, I think I’ll be satisfied. Sad to see Ben and Claudia out of a job again. Interested to see if Michael Shanks can go on to other work.
I’m not.. mad. Not like I was with Farscape. Not so long as they give me an ending suitable to be an ending.

“SCI FI believes that the time is right to make this season their last on the channel…”
I.e. it could carry on on another channel? Interesting choice of words. I find it sad that they choose to bow out when the Show has just started to throw off the shackles of the past and has been so rejuvenated by the addition of the new cast members and foes. Just as a new breath of life had flowed into the project it has all been brought to an end.
I wouldnt call B&B a kiss of death- Farscape lasted 4 seasons then came back from the dead!
Michael in Nashville says
Well, at least SciFi gave them enough notice so they could finish up their storylines unlike how they treated Farscape. Yes, I’m still angry and bitter about how Farscape was cancelled. That show was in its prime and while the 200th episode of SG1 was entertaining, you can tell that creatively the show has run out of gas this year.
Shawn S. says
Stargate was formulaic and held to that that ‘end episode with nothing changed’ kind of TV mentality. That’s why I stopped watching it. Then that started to change in the last season and NOW sciffy decides to cancel it… go figure.
Farscape was interesting and popular, yet sciffy cancelled it. We just can’t have nice shows, can we?
I just have trouble fathoming the mind of tv execs.
If they touch BSG, I’ll convert to radical Islam and convince Bin Laden that sciffy is the heart of America.
*sigh*
Damien.G says
I have to say that makes me more happy than sad. I would try and watch the show every so often and always found it totaly boring and formulaic.
I only ever noticed the show when something better got cancelled as in ‘Why did they cancel [INSERT INTERESTING SF SHOW] and make yet another season of SG1?”
Grend says
I know I was bitching about watching just last week, but this is another rant altogether.
MGM Wants the show to go on. SciFi is doing what is HAS TO in its minds, no hard feelings I’ll watch their other shows.
…and if MGM wants this successful show to continue…
…I’m betting they’re at LEAST CONSIDERING direct to DVD, or a farscape style wrapup miniseries. THAT is a model I would love to see tested with Stargate’s tried and true model, whaddayathink?
Kurt says
On the bright side, they’re releasing Stargate on iTunes…
http://www.gateworld.net/news/2006/08/istargatei_arrives_on_itunes.shtml
Kurt says
Actally, reading that gateworld article:
On the past few eps, M&E have been discussing “alternative” distribution models. Well, here it is boys!
Produced content, subscribed a season in advance (for a fee).
It’s basically a video podcast you pay for. 😉
Ed from Texas says
Well, that just sucks. I’ve never really gotten into Atlantis, so I’m rather surprised that it is getting higher ratings than SG-1. Looks like It’ll just be BSG and Dr. Who now, if those shows every actually come back as promised.
You guys are right – first Farscape, and now this. Why, with all the crap on television, do good shows like these end up getting canned?
karl says
RODNEY FTW!!!
Atlantis is in my humble opinion maturing into an even better show than SG1.
tllgrrl says
“The cancellation “was not a ratings-driven decisionâ€? said Mark Stern, exec VP of original programming for the SCI FI Channel.
Since when?!
A TV show is still pulling good numbers, which means the ad revenue is still coming in.
Am I missing something? When did a network ever cancel a show that was making money?
Dave M. says
Crap, I went and posted a comment before reading the next entry in my feed reader. Figures…
So I wonder what SciFi will replace the time slot with next season. Extreme Golf? Or maybe NASCAR, that would fit with the CRAP that they are putting on now.
I wonder if SG1 could go back to ShowTime. I would so be willing to pay for ShowTime if they kept the series going there.
Kyle Nin says
It would have to be “spaceship NASCAR” or “Golf on the Moon” or something. It would have to have some sort of a Sci-Fi theme to it. It wouldn’t make it much better and you’d probably only watch it once, if it at all.
Dave M. says
What does Wrastling (spelling on purpose) have to do with SciFi or Speculative Fiction for that matter. I suppose you could have a tenuos link with “Who wants to be a SuperHero” to either SciFi or Speculative Fiction, but I don’t know if I would go that far really.
Phil from LI New York says
Now they can use the money for sg1 and put it to use for great films like Mansquito and ss doomtrooper(being sarcastic of course). I’m mad about this, but Martin Gero says its not over, so hopefully they can do some good outta this….. but i’d still rather have it go on for at least another few seasons.
H. Ray says
Personally, I nether liked nor disliked the show. But I did get sort of tied of it taking up the whole line up on Monday nights. I myself prefer movies. But, there in lies my gripe. It’s the Sci-Fi channel for crying out loud! Why don’t they ever show classic Science Fiction movies? Those my age would love it, and they younger folks would get exposed to good Sci-Fi from the 1950’s. Many, for the first time. And last but certainly not the least……. just what the $^)^&^% does that crap wrestling have to do with Sci-Fi?????

Slightly disappointing news but not entirely unexpected.
10 years is a long time for a show to last and making the announcement early gives the writers time to resolve the Ori storyline satisfactorily.
With Atlantis still going on we should be able to continue to see the characters from SG1 making guest appearances in this show.
mikeRabil says
i cant believe what i’m reading from you people! i thought everyone would be mad as hell at sciffy for yet another K-Y job but everyone seems “ho hum. it was time to go”. Well you richard dean anderson fanboys finally got what u wanted. I for one thought the show was getting really, really good and loved the farscape crew additions. Go watch your wrastlin and mansquito , i’m boycotting sciffy. screw em.
Jeff says
10 years is a long time, but, if a show is still popular with the viewers, they should want to continue it for as long as possible. Of course, this is also the Sci-Fi network that is now showing a stupid wrestling show and likes to cancel popular shows. You have to wonder what they think up in their glass tower.
Sam says
I have to agree that who cares how long a show has gone on if it is still good with great potential and I think SG1 still had plenty of both left in it. Afterall, Doctor Who has been running in various forms or another since the 1960’s and I still see no end in site for the creativity behind that show as well.
With that being said, I would be remiss not to point out one serious flaw I saw with seasons 8 & 9:
I was hoping the producers and writers would do something about a this flaw, but they have not. One of the main problems as I saw it was that the Stargate program was run by the military and as such must have a definite progressive chain of command for each team. When Jack was onboard he was the ranking officer of SG1, and even though Jackson was a civilian, he respected Jack’s authority and Teal’c, having come from a similar background, also bowed to Jack’s authoritive rank.
When Mitchell came onboard he and Sam were the exact same rank and it was obvious that he did not want to step on anyone’s toes, not even Jackson’s. It was he that was in awe of them, even though he was their commanding officer, and it showed in each episode.
I was hoping they would address this discrepency and it looked promising in the 199th show when Mitchell and the General (Beau Bridges) spent time together at Jack’s old cabin and discussed this very problem. I thought that at this point they may promote Mitchell to the rank of full-bird Colonel, giving him the authority over Sam’s rank as Lt. Col., but they didn’t. All that occured was the General telling Mitchell that it was Mitchell’s problem because it was he, against the General’s advice, that worked so hard to reassemble the original SG1 team back together.
It was at that point, in episode 199, that I knew the producers were sending a signal that the show was getting ready to sadly go away.
That aside – I say give SG1 another 10 years and then we, the fans, can decide if that is enough.

I’m still waiting for the first online petition to convince anyone “in power”, but for those who want to try:
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Stargate/index.html
Kyle Nin says
Well, this is weird situation, because even though the Sci-Fi Channel cancelled the show, the production company MGM still wants it to go on. So would a petition even apply in this case?
Ann McDonald says
I am heartbroken! I can’t wait till SiFi Friday! I love this show. I loved FarScape. I hate this. Please, don’t let it end! Do the actor’s want out? I can’t believe they do. This is a great show that should not end.
Morghan Phoenix says
Well, the only thing I can say good for the sci-fi channel is they’re gonna save me $50 a month on cable bills. From the time they pulled farscape I was doubtfull regarding thier taste, now that SG1 is gone and they’re stuffing the lineup with wrestling and other useless dren I see no further reason to shell out the cash.
Jason says
I have a comment about the “Golf on the moon” statement. Let me ask a question. What does ECW have to do with SCIFI? Clearly, not all of the programming is based on science fiction.
Although I do need to compliment SCIFI for bringing “Eureka” onboard, I do like that show!
b says
Wrestling is only on scifi because the owners of USA and Sci-fi (I believe it is NBC, but I’m not totally sure) couldn’t find a time for it on any of their other channels so they put it on scifi. Purely a move to get the show on the air somewhere. Maybe they thought it would attract new people to the station who would watch wrestling but not scifi and they could ram shows down their throats thru commercials.
Troy says
wow im not watching the Sci Fi channel anymore so much for that channel. i hope ratings drop so much that they have to bring it back or that the channel goes belly up. It would serve them right. Peace to Sci Fi im out
Sunny says
The only thing that would make me happy is the resurrection of “firefly”, beside that I think Sg-1 Should no be cancelled, tho the show may run out of gas I like the carcters, Daniel ,Tealc and Carter, Daniel was complely the original guy since he was in teh movie that started the series and tealc and Carter kicks ass.
Long to short- I don’t want Sg-1 being cancelled unless fireflies ressurects. If not I want Sg-1 to stay on.
Sunny says
Ps-Troy, and Sam I totally agree with both of you, but there is still Battlestar Galactica but screw that if there cancelling Sg-1, I’m with you buddy.
