Gibson Crucifies Self

July 31, 2006 By Sam Sloan 11 Comments

medium_mel-gibson.4.jpeMel Gibson, the controversial director/actor/producer nailed another stake into his cross of self-destruction this past week.

In a drunken stupor, after being pulled over by police for erradict driving behavior, the director of the “Passion of Christ” and the soon to be released “Apocalypto” for Disney, blurted obscene anti-semitic slurs at the police officer who pulled him over shouting that all the world’s wars are caused by those “f**king Jews!” Then Gibson turned to the officer arresting him and spat “are you a f**kin’ Jew?” Gibson’s alcohol level was 0.12 and he was charged with a DUI.

One has to ask how much longer Disney will put up with the self-destructive antics of Gibson. This is not the first time he or his family has opened the door of controversy that has led to embarrassment for Disney Pictures and their family oriented audiences. Gibson’s father is famous for denying the Holocaust and being very outspoken about it.

After hearing of this incident it made me think of an old proverb that says “A sober man’s quiet thoughts or a drunkard’s outspoken remarks.”

I am not backing up anything he (Gibson) said, belive you me. However what I _DO_ find hilarious is “Hollywood” is split over this, and “How this will effect his career?”. Jeez, like nothing like this has happened before in Hollywood. Where did Hollywood’s high moral character suddenly appear from? That I do find funny.

Has Mel done anything remotely scifi since Mad Max? Oh I think he made that one about the guy in cryogenic freezing. not sure what else.

Bah it’s probably all a publicity stunt for his latest blockbuster.

DUI is a helluva publicity stunt. Putting lives in danger to promote your next flick seems a bit extreme to me, even for Gibson. Nah! I think the guy has some serious issues he needs to resolve before he hurts himself or someone else.

Or you could anger a lot of people and call Passion speculative fiction. 😉 But we won’t.

You really need to stop re-iterating rumor! Also, he was not stopped for erratic driving, he was stopped for excessive speed. I’ve looked at everything “legitimate” online and nowhere does it say he was driving erratically. And is this really newsworthy here at slice of scifi? I don’t think so!

Kind of a “Sad Way” to get Press but I bet if he wanted to play a Drunk Homeless Guy he’d have the part in no time…

That being said I have liked most all of his Films and I think he is a very good actor, but sometimes *The Evil Booze* can get the best of anyone and there have been many that it has got the best of along with drugs and other things…

Considering his Wealth I’m sure he will survive this…

Forcemaster2000, if you have looked at everything, “legitimate” why are you here, since you obviously consider what we are doing here less than “legitimate.” Gibson was driving 85mph in a 40mph zone. He was highly intoxicated. Now, I don’t know about you, but driving 85mph on a city street, in a 40mph zone with parked cars and other drivers and pedestrians along the way would cause even a sober driver to drive “erratic.” So, for us to state that he was driving in an erratic fashion was not too much of a stretch for us to make.

I don’t need to witness an event such as this to realize that the reports in the “legitimate” press may not use such words as “erratic” or “spat” or “spew” when it comes to celebrities of Gibson’s stature. But, we are not beholden to color Mel’s image in any light but the true hue of it.

Now, as to whether this is news worthy for a site such as ours?…..Yes it is. Gibson is a prominent member of the entertainment community that has starred and produced many of the scifi and fantasy and SF films we have viewed over the years. He, within the framework of that medium has access to the minds of our children and young people. That makes him and his openly public behavior (or mis-behavior) news worthy as far as we are concerned, and since I am the managing news editor for Slice of SciFi, I approved the final content of the story that went out and will stand by it.

Now, if you have a problem with what we report – then, just like your TV or the radio has a channel changer, all you have to do here is click your mouse elsewhere.

    Regarding Gibson’s anti-Sem rant:
1)If you know anything about his old man, all you can say is that the apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree.
2)There is an old saying in Hollywood that if Hitler was bringing in $$$, people would line up to work with him.

Gibson’s career isn’t going anywhere. Lots of people in this country are anti-Semitic. LOTS. Lots of them went to Passion of the Christ multiple times and bought tons of DVDs and all kinds of other merch connected to that film.
    LOTS.
The thing is that that shit was there all along. It just took some alcohol to let it out.
Hell, I wonder what he must think about black people.
Actually, I don’t wonder. I have a pretty good idea.
