Gibson Seeks Forgiveness

August 1, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 6 Comments

In a followup to our previous story concerning Mel Gibson’s recent DUI charge and his anti-Jewish rant, on Tuesday he issued what appears to be a heartfelt statement of regret for his actions and words, that not only reflect on him as a person, but on any future work he may wish to get in the entertainment industry.

He apologized for making those anti-Semitic remarks and has asked to meet with members of the Jewish community to begin a “path for healing.”

“There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark,” Gibson said in a statement. “I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested,” he added.

In the wake of the incident, the ABC television network has already pulled, of all things, a miniseries about a couple caught in the grips of the Holocaust that it was developing with Mel Gibson’s production company.

After publically apologizing for his “despicable behavior” Gibson, who holds strong conservative Catholic religious and political views and whose father is a Holocaust denier, entered a rehabilitation program to treat his alcoholism.

We can only hope that his trip to the center will not just be a band-aid for the troubled entertainer, but will bring about a true change in this destructive addiction and perhaps, begin to counter some of his obviously, strongly held predjudices. We wish Mel all the best in his recovery.

I’m going to take a bit of a chance.

Mel was arrested and drunk during the current events over in the Middle East, no? Are there not a lot of liberal-minded (read; sci-fi fans) people currently who are looking at Israel with the skunk-eye right now because of all the civilian Arab deaths from Israeli bombs? And looking at George Bush with the other skunk-eye because he’s such a warmonger, and would back up Israel on most decisions they make (if not all)?

Maybe that’s what was on his mind which the Demon Alcohol loosed his tongue, rather than a deep seeded hatred toward Jews? And then, of course, add the ranting of his crazy-ass daddy for all his developing life.

Well, that’s me taking a chance.

PS; Is that pic his mug shot for the DUI? He looks drunk there, LOL!

    Yep! That’s the mug shot.

I’ll forgive him if he never does anything in the movie industry again Last I knew being 0.12 BAC doesn’t make you suddenly spout anti-semtic views. That’s something you believe and just don’t feel like saying. Alcohol is the best truth serum and according to the report the arresting officer was jewish I thought.

Either way, he’s like Tom Cruise in my book. Any movie he is involved with in anyway will not be viewed by me.

    pfffff. “Path to healing”

We all know drunk people say what they think. So this is all PR bullcrap. His agent told him to it, Im positive he dosent want to do this.

I also seemed telling to me that in his apology he said that his religion requires him him to do this. Not “I want to make amends”, but “I’m required to tell you I’m sorry.”

“The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life,”

I dunno. Maybe I read that wrong, but it sounds to me like when your parents made you apologize to the other kid when you really weren’t that sorry. “My Mom says I have to apologize. Sorry.”
