Hellboy is coming to television as an animated serial via the Cartoon Cable Network.
In an interview with Superhero Hype, Tad Stones, producer of two of the Hellboy features to be shown on the network said that the stories will contain many of the elements from the Mike Mignola universe, but will center primarily on the red guy. “We’re not building the Justice League,” said Stones. “We’re not building the team. It is still about Hellboy.”
Ron Perlman, who played Hellboy in the live-action feature, will also provide the voice for the animated Hellboy. Other big names from the live-action movie making a voice appearance are Selma Blair as Liz, John Hurt as Broom and Doug Jones – the actor that played Abe Sapien – providing the voice for Abe. “Ron is Hellboy,” said Stones. “The reason we have a lot of the same cast as the movie is because we asked them and they said ‘yes!'”
For legal reasons the artistic look will be a little different in the animated series from the usual
Mignola style, so look for it. “Mike likes to see different interpretations of his work,” said Stones. “His work is very unique on the page and takes a long time to do. He looks at each page like a separate work of art.”
The Cartoon Network has acquired the rights for the Hellboy Animated Series for a possible seven year run.
