The Beeb is plugging the gaps in “The Invasion” for a DVD release!
“So what?”, we hear you grumble. Well here’s the exciting bit – two episodes of this story no longer exist, thanks to the BBC’s purges of their archives. To plug the gap, the Beeb have commissioned animator Cosgrove Hall (the people behind DangerMouse!) to create black and white animation of the missing bits, based on the original actors and set designs. These will be synched with the surviving audio soundtrack to give you a seamless viewing experience. Cool, huh?
Lead animator Steve Maher comments, “Working in Black and White animation is dramatic and graphic, it gave us the opportunity to employ the kind of noir lighting that only really works without colour. It’s a slightly surreal experience using digital technology to recreate the visual qualities inherent in a TV show from 1968 but a treat was Patrick Troughton’s Doctor – he has a wonderfully animatable face, so he was a gift.”
“The Invasion” will hit DVD in November and we’re really hoping they’ll do the same with “The Tenth Planet” next!

At the risk of sounding like “he who must not be named”
Whoa!
Michael in Nashville says
The team who is designing the recreations also did the 40th annviersary web story, the Scream of the Shalka in 2003.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.
Of course, the cynical part of me knows one day after I buy this version, they’ll find the two lost episodes…

In that case, pre-order now! 😀

LOL @ Kurt’s response.
Very exciting, the first Doctor is one I’ve rarely been able to see. So it’d be exciting to see what they do.
Brian from Winnipeg says
I have seen the six surviving episodes of Invasion, and it is definitely a classic. Tom, this one features the second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), but it is still well worth seeing. Invasion has one of the first appearances of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Cybermen and a great (human) villain called Tobias Vaughan. Good stuff!
