Does Doctor Who already have a new companion? That didn't take long

June 20, 2006 By Kyle Nin 8 Comments

freema.jpgDoes Doctor Who already have a new companion? While nothing is 100% definite it is looking more like the Doctor has found his replacement for Rose and her name is Adeola.

Actress Freema Agyeman from the U.K. soap opera Crossroads will be playing Adeola in the final two episodes of season two. Billie Piper, the actress who has portrayed the Doctor’s companion Rose Tyler for the last two seasons announced at the beginning of this month that she would be departing the show after the conclusion of this season. Freema, joins the Doctor and Rose, in a battle against the Cybermen.

The British tabloid Sun is shooting this story out as an almost definite, but until we get further verification from the BBC we will view this as a likely but still unsubstantiated rumor. Stay posted!

If this is true, then let me be the first to say YAAAAY!!
Another black woman joins the ranks of (fictional) Sistahs in Space:

Lt. Uhurah – Chief Communications Officer
Lily Sloane – Engineer who helped Zephraim Cochrane develope warp drive.
Guinan (who’s not actually black in the Afro sense…but she counts) – the El-Aurian host of Ten Forward.

I was beginning to wonder how long Rose was going to stay as a companion. The companions of the good Doctor are usually replaced even quicker than he is. I’ll miss Rose, but new blood is never a bad thing for this series–in fact, it defines it.

Dont know why you say it didnt take long, considering that they knew Piper was leaving way in advance. She didnt just decide in the last couple weeks.

It is actually exciting to see a black woman in that picture! In my mind, I always thought I’D be the Doctor’s first black televised companion (as I discount the Virgin novels where he had two black female companions).

Wait, unless you count Mickey as a companion? Hey yeah, he WAS! He was in two travelling adventures with the Doctor before he went off to meet his fate.

Okay then. All that above? Nevermind. 🙂

The wha–? What are the Virgin novels? Where can I get them?

And Mickey wasn’t technically one of the Dr’s companions. Rose is/was the companion and Mickey was just along for Rose.

Apparently the Adeola girl gets butchered by a Cyberman. But that would be nice to see her as a new companion….NEXT STEP, after a reeeeaaaly long run with Tennant as the Doc, he regenerates into an asian dude…or oriental..or black, but lets change him now. they’ve all been white guys so far and it would be good to get atleast one racial variant Doctor. After all, he has only got 3 more lives left.

    “A Time Lord has 13 lives….”

    Alvi..SPOILERS!! Dang. I haven’t even seen 2×11 yet, gimme a chance!

Tall Girl, here’s a link to the biggest answer(.com) I could ever have asked for.

    Here’s a link for novel cover pics and possibly a place to order them;

The Doctor’s two black companions in that series were Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart and Roz Forrester.

BBC Books took over the series when the TV movie was made, and then the novelization Doctor regenerated to the Paul McGann version too.

I almost owned all of them at one time, and now I have only most of them. 🙂

I consider Mickey a companion because he travelled with the Doctor for more than one story. It doesn’t matter to me why he joined. That precedent was set in the early days with the First Doctor–he had a woman, Sara Kingdom, join him during a 12-episode arc and she is listed as a companion because in the arc, she crossed over into at least one different storyline before her demise.

You’ll find on the Answers.com link above that Kadiatu L-S is listed as a companion even though she was only in two novels–but she was in two different stories and that’s what qualifies her.

On, my Doctor-Fu is VERY good.
