Andreas Katsulas Remembered

February 15, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 3 Comments

We have lost one of the giants of show business. On February 13th Andreas Katsulas died of lung cancer.

Andreas was an actor of exceptional ability and killed the steroetype of science fiction stars. He held his Master’s Degree in Theater and knew more about the minutia of theatrical quality than almost anyone.

Starting out on the stage, he became grounded in the kind of discipline that would make him a Hollywood staple for 20-years. He caught the attention of famed director Michael Cimino who cast him in The Sicilian. His performance was so gripping that Ridley Scott snatched him up for Someone To Watch Over Me. Then followed another great director seeking after him, Blake Edwards wanted him for Sunset.

Soon scifi came calling and his niche was forever sealed in the hearts and minds of scifi enthusiasts. He found parts on the television series Alien Nation, Star Trek and Max Headroom. Then he landed the role that made him a household name, the murdering one-armed man on Harrison Ford’s movie thriller, The Fugitive.

Next came a small, but pivotal role as a terrorist in Executive Decision. His list of credits from there are as long as your arm, but the one role he will forever be remembered and loved for by scifi fans was his character G’Kar on Babylon 5.

Andreas was only 59. Far too young to be leaving us so soon.

This truly is sad news. First Richard Biggs, now this. The sci fi universe is truly in mourning.

    A wonderful actor. RIP.

I keep thinking of the book of Gkar. He made that role so real.

Don’t forget, we also lost Tim Choate, who portrayed Zathras with such wonderful zeal.
