“Dark Crystal” Sequel Comes To Life

February 7, 2006 By Kyle Nin 4 Comments

The Dark Crystal, a 1982 film that Slice of SciFi fans picked as their 5th best all-time fantasy film is finally getting its sequel made after a 24 year hiatus.

An original concept from the brillant mind of the late and great Jim Henson and directing genius of Frank Oz, The Dark Crystal is still considered one of the best genre films ever made.

The sequel, called “The Power of the Dark Crystal” will be set many years in the distant future from the original film and is about a girl made of fire who steals a shard of the Crystal to reignite her dying sun.

Once Jen and Kira, the guardians of the Crystal realize what has happened they must go on the quest to save the kingdom.

Brian Henson was originally set to direct, but now The Jim Henson Company has tagged Genndy Tartakovsky (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) to helm the sequel. While this sequel will still be a mainly puppet-driven film Tartakovsky’s animation company, Orphanage Animation Studios will duty the computer animation segments.

Production begins this summer and look for The Power of the Dark Crystal in theaters sometime in 2007.

    Oh, FREAKING AWESOME!
I love that movie! It’s one of the most original pieces of storytelling that I have ever seen.

I can’t wait to see this new effort, although I have to confess some reservations about Gendy’s involvement. While he did a great job with the Clone Wars series, his style is still a little bit too “artsy” for my tastes.
Samurai Jack was well-suited to the style, and Clone Wars was decent after getting used to seeing that same animation style, but I sincerely hope that the characteristics of his proportional ideals don’t bleed into this new effort. It would be too hard to look past the whole “Samurai Jack” look if it were evident in the new Dark Crystal as well.

Snakes on a mother fraking plane! I hope this doesn’t go straight to video. Love to see it on the big screen.

I have to say, visually the Dark Crystal was amazing, but everywhere else it was severly lacking. Cutting was slow, character development was dodgy at best, and I hated the main character. I hope the plot and cutting in the sequel is better.

    But, that’s just my opinion.

It’s about time! It had better rock my socks!
