Check out the Arizona Republic’s “Fall Movie Forecast”.
Is it just me, or did the person who wrote this bite-sized preview of many of the fall’s upcoming movies discover that someone peed in his Cheerios that morning? That, or he became so distracted with trying to come up with disparaging puns for all the movies that he didn’t realize he was the one real joke in the room.
Then again, maybe it’s just more proof as to why so many people have switched to reading the Tribune instead. There’s no way he’s seen all of those movies, so his throwing around trite attempts at humor designed to put everyone off all the films is a poor excuse for whatever he’s calling this piece (because it certainly isn’t objective or informative).
In case you haven’t figured out why every self-proclaimed geek in the world should be pissed at this “reporter”, read the “forecast” he has for Serenity again… it’s not his opinion of the film that he sorely needs to be enlightened about.
[ If anyone wants to send a Letter to the Editor about Mr Muller’s disparaging remarks, remember that name-calling’s likely not to evoke serious consideration from this gentleman’s bosses ]
9/26 Update: Well, whaddaya know. Here’s a review of Serenity over at “New York Magazine” (spoilers abound! read at your own risk!) They seem to also think Universal and Joss Whedon have a hit on their hands. Wonder if Mr Muller would venture to call the folks at NY Mag friendless geeks for liking this movie…

Here was my comments to the rag:
Your writer of the Fall Movie Reviews in a Flash needs to get a flash and a clue. First there is no way he or any of his staff (if he even has one) could have seen all those movies to review them in such a short time (even if they got an early screening or were sent a DVD). If he had, he’d have no time to write a review, even a flash review. Second, it is obvious this guy has his head up his ass and is just trying to piss fans off, which is the only thing he succeeded at. And since he works for your rag, I suppose that means he has also pissed off people who might be tempted to read the other poorly written stories in your “news.”
Reviewers do tend to have a bias in the movies they review…some sincerely enjoy watching movies and still hold out hope of finding a good one to report on. Some, your guy being one of the bottom-feeders, just enjoy tearing up the creativity of another simply because they themselves have none and the 2 or 4 years they spent in journalism school seems to make them think they are expert critics on what is a good movie and what is not. FLASH REVIEW on your critic – “He sucks – get a real one.”

Sam, I remember reading your hilarious I.D.I.O.T.S. thread on TFU, perhaps you should use this as an example of another idiot.

Did this hump purposefully skip the release of HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE’s release in November? Or THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA in December?
What a dink.

A letter to the editor:
“To whom it may concern:
I found this article — http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/ae/articles/0925fallpreview0925.html — from the SliceofSciFi.com blog, and it is so reassuring to know that the media bias against fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy is alive and well. Not only did staff “writer” Bill Muller describe the upcoming film SERENITY as “The fans who bought up the DVDs (even after the series was canceled) bring their friends. Oh wait. They don’t have any friends. Fizzle: Ultimate geek showdown – The Ice Pirates vs. Battlestar Galactica.”; but Mr. Muller failed to mention two tiny releases coming up. In November, there will be HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, followed by the big-budget epic, THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. It astounds me that Mr. Muller is so lazy in his research, feels the need to resort to smarmy “playground name-calling” in his commentary, and clearly shows no interest in a film genre but still retains the responsibility to give the general public reviews that are “fair, honest, and open-minded”. Perhaps better editing, a more professional approach to this Fall Movie Preview, or even some time taken to truly research what movies are coming soon to theatres was needed to make this preview more polished and readable.
Instead, Arizona received Elementary School quality writing for one of its major news publications. I hope your media outlet will strive to do better in future movie previews and employ jounalists with stronger work ethics.”
No name-calling (although I was tempted). I was a a little concerned that the AZ Republic wanted my addy and telephone number…I hope Muller isn’t planning to send any stink bombs to my house or posts my phone number! :^0
