Cawley To Appear In “Hidden Frontier” Fan Series

August 31, 2005 By S. K. Sloan 5 Comments

The star of “Star Trek: New Voyages”, James Cawley, who plays Captain Kirk on the fan-produced series, will appear in “Star Trek: Hidden Frontier’s” upcoming episode “Vigil” as Captain Mackenzie Calhoun from the “Star Trek: New Frontier” series of books.

Carlos Pedraza, the producer of Hidden Frontier, announced the casting in a press release with more details on the Hidden Frontier web site.

Hidden Frontier follows the starship Excelsior under the command of Captain Elizabeth Shelby (Risha Denney), formerly the first officer and lover of Calhoun, who commands the Excelsior in the New Frontier novels of Peter David published by Pocket Books.

“Vigil”, which will run nearly 40 minutes in length and is expected to be released in September, focuses on Calhoun and Shelby working together on a secret mission in the midst of a fleet of Romulan ships during the Tholian War. While Hidden Frontier is set in the 24th century after The Next Generation, New Voyages takes place the generation before and showcases the original Star Trek crew played by new actors.

“Fan series like Hidden Frontier and New Voyages prove there is still plenty of life left in the Star Trek franchise,” said Cawley, a onetime production crewmember of Star Trek: The Next Generation who produces as well as stars in New Voyages. His series is scheduled to begin production next month on its third episode, “To Serve All My Days,” guest-starring Walter Koenig (Chekov). Hidden Frontier has produced 40 episodes.

    Firstly,
1). I think the series should change its name to whatever but to call it a branch of Star trek would offend the true trekkies , I watched the first show and im still left speeeeechless.
2). Where did they find all these amazing characters, Ive watched Star Trek for thirty years if this series the hidden frontier continues , im going to DS9 to marry quark

With respect to Mike, our first two seasons were our learning experience years and are correspondingly rough. Like you, I’ve watched Star Trek for nearly forty years, and like you, I have not always liked what I’ve seen. This hasn’t really prevented me from watching a representative sample from each of the subsequent Star Treks.

I don’t want to get into a discussion of “true” Star Trek fans beyond commenting that I thought Trek fandom tended to be inclusionary, not exclusionary.

Since your comment of a year ago, we have completed another season of episodes; our fiftieth and final episode is scheduled for release on or about May 19th.

If you still dislike Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, then you can at least take comfort from the fact it has formally wrapped and will be produced no more.

I have seen the first two “New Voyages” episodes and can’t wait for the third one (World Enough and Time with Georege Takei) and while it takes a little while to get used to different actors playing the crew of the Enterprise, the basic themes and ideas as put forth by Gene Roddenberry 41 years ago (43 if you count “The Cage”) are still evident in these fan produced episodes. True that the effects can be a little disappointing (just like rewatching the original series (Non-HD) after seeing the CGI effects-laden movies and DVD’s of today) but it’s nice and refreshing that at least someone else can do justice to the original dream and keep it alive when the studio is taking a rest for now.
