What’s Ahead for “SGU?”

July 27, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

If you’re like me, you’re counting down until the return of “Stargate: Universe.” The first season left audience on a massive cliffhanger and the final run of episodes saw the series hitting its stride.

Based on interviews with cast members on the show and this weekend’s ComicCon panel, it sounds like things will hit the ground running and not let up when the show returns later this year.

The panel did reveal a few things about season two, including the fact that T.J. and Chloe will survive into season two. The question is, what society will they be living in when they wake up?

When the second season premieres, the stranded Lucian Alliance and Destiny crews will have to start working together. “We’re dealing with the repercussions of the end of Season 1, and having some of those Lucian Alliance people on board the ship, and how they eventually weave their way into the [people’s lives] on board,” said executive producer Robert Cooper, who moderated the panel.

Eli (David Blue) will begin a relationship with one of the Lucian Alliance members. Blue joked that he felt “lucky” that Eli is getting a real love interest. “Nerds need love, too,” he said. “I really like the evolution of the Eli and Chloe relationship, and it’s nice to see that grow in its own way, but then also have something else going on for him.”

Not only will Eli have a new love interest this season, but he’ll also go head-to-head with a “Stargate Atlantis” alum. David Hewlett, who played Dr. Rodney McKay, will bring out a dark side of Eli, while Robert Picardo will also stop by.

As for how the ship will fare during the takeover, Dr. Rush — played by Robert Carlyle, who will also direct Episode 4 in the new season — will discover the bridge of Destiny, captain’s chair and all. “It becomes a character for the rest of the season,” said Carlyle.

I was already looking foward to season two of SGU but this only makes the wait more painful. Basically this show is going to be everything Voyager should have been. I’m not completely knocking VOY, it’s a fun show to watch but it hardly has any depth but thats where SGU comes up in spades. I’m really looking foward to this show of consequences.

OK. You’re stuck on a spaceship lost somewhere in another galaxy, but it’s NO PROBLEM, man, because lots of people from home will just keep dropping by. You’ll feel like you never left home.

Is it just me, or is this sounding even more like “Star Trek: Voyager”? Just replace the Destiny with Voyager, replace the Lucian Alliance with the Marquis, and replace the Icarus Base personnel with Starfleet Officers. The only thing missing is a couple of alien crew members.

Funny how so many people think Voyager was the first TV show with this concept……

Except the fact that Voyager was a plain vanilla version of bringing together various backgrounds into one common goal while never allowing the ship to get permanently messed up or actually kill any crew members. Voyager is the embodiment of Star Trek’s creative stagnation, and although I do enjoy watching the show, I realize that there are much better series on the market.

Battlestar Galactica had many aspects that Voyager should have had, including a ship that actually accrues battle scars and damage, front-line crew members who die… permanently, and crew members who don’t just give up on past allegiances because the Federation’s utopian viewpoint is soooooo cool.

If SGU can reach even half the level that BSG did in terms of realism and depth, I’ll be happy.

    …

And Kyle, it’s MAQUIS, not MARQUIS. Check out the historical basis for them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maquis_(World_War_II)

I just lost interest in Voyager when it forgot about plot and character development, and became all technobabble.

Agreed. The technobabble plots and the shameless cross-promotions for other UPN properties… like wrasslin’ in the Delta Quadrant. *facepalm*

Ok..I hate to say this but I miss the Alien interaction. I know that SGU is suppose to be the BSG of the stargate universe..and be all character centric..but you can only take so much whining and bitching about how you miss home and running low on water, and woe is me. I want ALIENS..its a frakin scifi show for gods sake..not 90210 in space. My fav. episodes so far this season have been the ones where the unknown aliens were trying to take over the ship.
