Is a “Moonlight” Movie Possible?

July 1, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 22 Comments

With the renewed interest in vampire romance sagas and the series winning a Saturn award for best DVD presentation last week, it appears there may be some momentum for a “Moonlight” movie.

The series, which came just before the latest vampire craze fueled by “Twilight,” was canceled after one season on CBS.    Despite a solid start in the ratings, the series never fully recovered from the writer’s strike and was let go prematurely.  Now producer Harry Werksman is offering fans hope that a movie could provide some closure to the series.

“Well, we were setting up in the end of our first season that there was a coming war,” Werksman told SciFi Wire. “There was the family from which Coraline came, and it was a royal bloodline of vampires that Mick had been brought into, very much unwanted on his part. I think what we were going to try and do is to have the movie encapsulate the entire second season of the coming war.”

There may be one huge hurdle for a movie to overcome–reuniting the cast.  After the series was canceled, most of the regular cast moved on to other acting jobs.

“You know, unfortunately, I think that everyone has kind of moved on,” Werksman acknowledged.  However, a move isn’t entirely out of the question because series star Alex O’Laughlin is still interested in returning to the “Moonlight” universe.

“I know I talked to Alex just a couple weeks ago, after ‘Three Rivers’ got picked up, and I was congratulating him,” he said. “He’s like, ‘When are we going to do the movie?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, man. Any time you’re ready.'”

He did say that it was possible that the series could continue in other mediums, including comic books.

YES, YES, YES! I want to see a Moonlight Movie! Its time to see Mick St. John and the gang back on the screen! Got to have Sophia as Beth and Jason as Josef and of course Moonlight would not be complete without Alex O’Loughlin!

A movie encompassing the events of the second-season-that-never-was would be terrific. Hopefully the actors who play the main characters would be willing and available to film it. Yes, Alex O’Loughlin is amazing, but it was the entire cast that made Moonlight what it was. It’s nice to see that others feel the show was cancelled prematurely. Too bad that Moonlight was just ahead of its time.

If not a movie, then someone has to write the second (and third, and fourth, etc.) season as a series of novels. I don’t think a comic book would do justice to the show or to the characters.

Alex O’Loughlin reported twice that it was mentioned to him about a movie and both times he responded YES, he’d be up for it. I could see a movie with the Mick/Beth romance – of course someting thrown in the way of it – some “Matrix” like special effects. A lot of Josef/Mick interaction just like on the show with sacrasm and dry humor.

Last we heard there was a “list” of vampires. I’m sure writers could come up with something really interesting in the way of plot. Coraline and Lance could be involved somehow, too. Most important will be discovering the man behind the vampire, his struggles with being a vampire, his voiceovers in his sexy voice, all the problems involved with loving a human. Definitely needs to be character-driven But lots of special effects and fight scenes too!

I would love to have a Moonlight movie, not only to see more of the show that I adored, but to have closure to the many unanswered questions surrounding Coraline’s bloodline, the cure, and most importantly what happens to the MickBeth relationship. When I saw Sonata I did not know the show had been cancelled. Now all I have left is a closed door.

With all the interest in vampire genre sparked by Twilight and True Blood, I know that a Moonlight movie would be a big hit.

There is not a day that goes by that MOONLIGHT does not impact my life in some way. I have never been so moved by any TV show to post on a message board, write letters to networks or sponsors, set up a MySpace or Facebook page…etc., prior to MOONLIGHT. I can’t begin to tell you how my life has changed since Moonlight came into my life. And I know I’m not alone. A show that can have that kind of impact on it’s fans is SPECIAL indeed. Please…PLEASE give us a MOONLIGHT movie…Cast in tact. I mean, sure, I’d rather have a 2nd…3rd…et.c, season. But, in lieu of that, a movie will do just fine. And, once it succeeds, a new movie every few years does not seem too unreasonable of a request. In case you can’t tell, I LOVE MOONLIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oooh, I would love a Moonlight movie. They left so many unanswered
questions. I know the fans would love to see Alex and the gang back
together and have our questions answered. Even a tv mini series would
    be great !!!!!

A Moonlight movie would be fantastic and give us closure on so many unanswered questions. I want to know more about what happened to Coraline when Lance took her, what does Talbot do about the list he received; does Mick gain any special abilities since his blood line now consists of Coraline’s and Josef’s. There are so many wonderful stories yet to be written about this show that I still long to see. Moonlight stole my heart like no show ever did or ever will in the future.

Would LOVE to get more Moonlight in any “live” form, certainly not in comics for us. It is missed as much today as the day CBS canceled the show!! Speaking for 5 in the age demos and 5 beyond the age demos, our first choice would be a season 2 or mini series. Second choice a movie (TV or Theater) where the arc is written with several in mind i.e., Star Wars Trilogy or Indiana Jones Series. I have never been an active fan of any show or cast but Moonlight ‘touched people” of all ages. It was a love story and a drama with humor. The cast was perfect in their roles playing their parts to perfection and actually breathing life into them. People have even commented on the sets, the camera work and how beautiful our city looked. The whole premise of this program was a modern day vampire story, missing many of the gimmicks of the genre in general. It appealed to me (became my all time favorite show) and I am not a fan of the genre in general. For me anything else would need the complete original cast and for the story to pick up where we left off tying it to the TV series. Also, what I think set this apart from other “vampire shows” is the storyline was great without the necessity of other creatures. Hoping we somehow get more!!

    Dear Mike!

I have to agree with Alex, what are you waiting for?!! Moonlight was and still is a goldmine!…you’re sitting on a pot o’ gold! Mick is Alex’s alter ego! No one can play this character…Don’t wait! Do it, do it now!!! I purchased the TV series and I’m telling you..its way, way better than all those other Vampire TV series. Moonlight has history, immense history. Trust your gut instinct and go for it. TV/Movie or both, I am so there to support it!

I very much like a serial the Moonlight. I am not the mad fan of vampires and also don’t go mad on their cult. I will tell, I am the rational admirer of the story. Very much it was pleasant to me that subject is presented vitally. The idea “vampires among us” is look like a norm. Here vampires are not presented as fantastic beings from a fairy tale of Bram Stoker and as the turning people living among other people which try to survive in this world, which, as well as people, can be bad and good which can love, be on friendly, hate, make noble acts and crimes… as well as people. 🙂 The Moonlight vampires are represented new race living among people.
It is absolutely new approach to a subject about vampires. There is a new idea of interaction of vampires and people through love, friendship and not just desire to suck blood.
I want this history lives and can proceeded.

I’d watch it… Many, MANY times. =P I’ve watch the season at least 17 times all the way through.
If they do do a movie, I really hope they get as much of the original cast as possible. (Jason Dohring *cough*) =P

But yeah, I’d watch it no matter what. <3
In the words of Josef, “It is SO on!” (=
