If “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” has survived to a third season, executive producer John Middleston tells SciFi Wire that fans could have looked forward to greater exploration of the implications of John Connor leaping forward into the future.
“”If we had gotten a third season, I should say, we definitely would have explored what it all meant,” he said. “But I think there’s a great moment where we see Allison [Summer Glau], and John’s look to her is very meaningful. I think that also would have been a great thing in terms of dramatic potential. Like I said, the show has ended, and it would all be speculation, and I really don’t want to raise anybody’s expectations.”
One theory about the ending is that by leaping to the future, John Connor never grew up to become the leader of the human resistance. That would free him of the burden of saving humanity.
“I think that that’s the right interpretation, because in the actual footage of the show, we see that Derek doesn’t recognize him,” Middleton said. “So, by jumping into this future, he has erased his existence in a certain way, and we see that. We see that nobody recognizes him.”
Middleston says that while he’s passionate about the characters from “Sarah Connor” and would love to see them live again on the large or small screen, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too high for a return to the series any time soon.
“I can tell you that I love those characters,” he said. “I use a business term, and it sort of belies my emotional investment in these characters, but they are a great franchise asset. My passion for them is not diminished at all, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

No worries – getting our hopes up with Fox happens all the time. Go ahead, live a little…Lie to us…Tell us things you think should have happened. Fans WILL RUN WITH IT.
Mark Garcia says
If John Connor does not take his place as Leader of the human resistance, you have no story, there is no show. you can run with him possibly trying to get back, (make it right) but it is his destiny. Thats what its all about, if John Connor does not take his place then what is the point? That is not The Terminator. get intricate, crazy< but work around the story line, if not its a whole nother entity in all.

The whole point of the show was John coming to terms with his destiny, so season three should be about him trying to find a way back to make things “right”.
