Smith Will Have New TARDIS Interior

March 4, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

Maybe this is the TARDIS re-design some fans were talking about on our Voice Mail show a few weeks ago.

The TARDIS will get a new interior design with Matt Smith takes over at the 11th Doctor next year according to the Daily Mirror.  The BBC recently signed off on a new design for the interior of the Doctor’s time-machine.

The production team will also improve the quality of the police box exterior for the opening episode of Smith’s tenure.

Production sources say the decision is being taken by new Doctor Who writer and executive producer Stephen Moffat, who wants to distance himself from previous show chief Russell T Davies.

He wants the arrival of Matt Smith to signify a new era, and also to withstand Doctor Who being in high definition. A source said: “It will be the most hitech, intricate TARDIS ever.”

That is, without doubt, the best news I’ve heard all day. (admittedly it’s only half past 7 in the morning, but still) As much as I love the current TARDIS design, I can’t wait to see what Moffat and his team come up with. It’s gonna be legendary.

I’m a little nervous about seeing the new interior of the TARDIS. I really loved the mixed look of technological and organic elements in the TARDIS. The old designs from back in the day always looked so cheap and shoe-string budget (which they were, of course). I hope that Moffat is true to his word that the new design will be the “most intricate TARDIS ever”, although the article says that quote is from “a source” and not actually from the mouth of Moffat. So, we’ll just have to wait a year and see what they come up with.

I’ve got a lot of faith in Moffat, so I’m confident what changes he’ll bring will be necessary and exciting for the franchise.

I have thought it was a bit weird they only show that one room when the Tardis is suppose to be so damn big.

I’ve always like this version some! Wish he would use a side/back door and have a second control room……seems it needs a second control bridge
