CW renews “Smallville” and “Supernatural”

CW renews “Smallville” and “Supernatural”

February 25, 2009 By Michael Hickerson 8 Comments

Looks like we’ll have at least one more year before he becomes the Man of Steel.   The CW announced today they’ve picked up six series for next fall, including genre-series “Smallville” and “Supernatural.”

The next season will be the ninth for “Smallville.”  The series, which focuses on a young Clark Kent’s journey to becoming Superman, has been performed well in the ratings in a competitive Thursday time-slot and was considered a priority for the CW to return.  The big delay came in re-upping with series star Tom Welling for a ninth season.   No word yet on if the ninth season will be the final one for the series.

The CW also gave a green light to a fifth season of “Supernatural.”  Like “Smallville,” the series is a consistent performer for the network on a competitive night.  It also a loyal, core audience that is attractive to the CW’s advertisers.

Not getting a renewal notice was “Reaper,” which debuts its second season next week.   The Hollywood Reporter says the show is considered on the bubble for a third season.  It will depend on ratings and response to the new season.

Other CW shows getting a green light for a new season include “Gossip Girl,” “One Tree Hill, “90210,” and “America’s Next Top Model.”

I’m very happy about this. For one thing, “Supernatural” was always envisioned by the creator is a five-year arc show, so not getting to see the end of the story would’ve sucked. And as I’ve said before, during this latest season “Smallville” has been pulling out the big guns and delivering some fantastic episodes (not “BSG” quality, but still pretty damn good).

    Supernatural: YAY!!!
    Smallville: NOOOOOOOO!!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I do like Smallville, but it does not need another season. I just don’t see how they can go any further unless they Clark’s wearing the “S” and flying. Since that’s not likely to happen, I don’t see how they can pull it off.

As long as Reaper gets a pick up too, I don’t care about the others.

I haven’t watched Supernatural (I know. I know. It’s on the to-do list.), but from what I’ve heard it’s going pretty strong. Good for them.

Smallville, on the other hand, has overstayed its welcome. I’ve been watching this season because I thought it was the last and I wanted to see how the trainwreck ends. Hearing this news, though, I’m sorely tempted to get out while the gettin’s good. Or, rather, bad. The current season is disappointing at best, and often painful. I can’t take much more of this! Oh, CW, why must you torture me so?! [/melodramatic]

You’re an idiot if you think this season of “Smallville” is anything less than the best season so far. And that’s not an opinion. That’s the truth.

Sorry for the outburst, but it feels like “Enterprise” all over again. The last two seasons turned that series around and into something great (although short-lived). And that’s exactly what this season is doing for “Smallville”.

No one wants to give the series a chance because they’re stuck in the past. This season is obviously the best. But when people think of “Smallville” they always seem to think of the worst of the series instead of the best.

    Smallville: I really don’t care!
    Supernatural: Heck yes!!!

I’m really glad that the decided to keep SPN on! It is my fav show!
