As the TARDIS gets ready to materialize on a new season of “Doctor Who,” those fans who want to discover more from the series’ classic days can do so with a wealth of stories coming to DVD this year.

The Doctor Who Restoration Team and 2 Entertain! have officially announced that “The Time Meddler” starring William Hartnell and the 20th anniversary story “The Five Doctors” are headed for DVD later this year. This will mark the second release of “The Five Doctors” on DVD with the two-disc set including the original edit of the story and the special, enhanced edition. A new commentary track has been recorded for the story featuring many of the companions from the series’ long-run and rumor has it a special, hidden commentary will be included on the set featuring members of the current production team.

Also confimed is a three-story box set entitled “Beneath the Surface.” The set includes two Jon Pertwee stories and one from Peter Davison’s era. The Pertwee stories are “Doctor Who and the Silurians” and the classic “The Sea Devils.” Davison’s story is the sequel to both, “Warriors of the Deep.” The stories will be available in a box-set and separately. The set released soon in the UK and will be availble to U.S. fans in June.

In addition, the British film board has approved several other stories for release, most of them from the fourth Doctor’s long-run on the show. Included on the apporved list are “The Brain of Morbius,” “The Invisible Enemy” and “The Invasion of Time.” “Enemy” is rumored to be a two-disc set that will include the spin-off epsiode “K-9 and Company” on the second disc.

American fans can look forward to several new releases coming to the United States in the weeks and months ahead. In March, it’s a double Tom Baker release with “The Planet of Evil” and “Destiny of the Daleks.” In May, Jon Pertwee classic “The Time Warrior” and the much-deride Colin Baker “Time Lash” hit store shelves.

U.S. fans can also be on the lookout for the updated Key to Time box-set at some point later this year or early in 2009.

At last, the Silurians! One of the best Pertwee stories, indeed one of the best Dr Who stories of all time.
