This week’s Slice of SciFi Poll asks — Which Starfleet engineer is the best? With that in mind our next story is quite relevant. The Scottish paper, The Daily Record is reporting that the list of Scottish actors to play the role of Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott for the J.J. Abrams movie “Star Trek” has just gotten longer.

Already on that list were James McAvoy, the actor in “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” and “The Last King of Scotland,” as well as the actor from the television series “Still Game,” Greg Hemphill.

According to the paper, footballer-turned-actor Martin Compston has also indicated that he would love to land the role of the miracle-working engineer and third in command of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The rumors that Tom Cruise will play Captain Christopher Pike and Russell Crowe is seeking to play the villain in this new Trek film still run rampant, but there has been no verifiable information coming out of Paramount to add weight to the claims. A spokesperson for Cruise has denied the rumor, while there has been no official denial or positive nod from the Crowe camp.

The Daily Record” is also claiming that an unidentified friend of Compston’s said: “Martin has had a couple of callbacks for the part of Scotty. But they’re a way from making a decision on the part yet and there’s some stiff competition. He has joked that he might look a bit too young for the part and worries it might be one of the rare examples of someone in Hollywood being held back because they look too young.”

The only definite roles currently cast for this huge Abrams undertaking are Zachary Quinto (“Heroes”) as the young Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy as the older Spock and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to play Uhura, but nothing has been finalized in that deal yet.
