Joss Says “NO!” To Wonder Woman

February 3, 2007 By S. K. Sloan 10 Comments

BREAKING NEWS

Joss Whedon, according to a quote from him on Whedonesque.com, will no longer be involved with the “Wonder Woman” film project.

Quoting creative differences between his vision for the film and that of studio execs, Joss decided that the best thing for him and the ultimate end-product would be for him to step aside.

“I’m no longer slated to make Wonder Woman,” stated the famous director. “I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.”

Joss wanted to make it clear that the parting was amicable and that this kind of thing happens all the time. “Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional,” explained Joss. ” We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time.”

The visionary behind such landmark television shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” stated that while this does tend to happen often, this time it did come as sort of a surprise to him and his staff. “I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.”

As we reported just this week, others at Warner Bros. did have other ideas that clashed with Whedon’s promoting the studio to go so far as to buy up another script from two newcomers that saw the “Wonder Woman” universe in a diametrically opposite direction from Joss’ idea and one that many of the execs were happy with, even if the movie’s producer Joel Silver, was not.

We asked the question then, “Which script would win out?,” and now we have our answer.

From Joss’ public statement he appears to have no regrets over his decision to leave the project stating, “…..So I’m a free man.”

What’s next for Joss?

“There is that “Goners” movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I’ve wanted to pursue,” Joss revealed to his fans. “I’m as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that’s a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible.”

Now to the big question. Who was he seriously considering for the role of Wonder Woman? Amid all the speculation over the last year, did he ever focus in on just one actress as a serious contender? “Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner,” he said with great relief. “I didn’t have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. (No! Rim! There was rim!) That’s the greatest relief of all. I can do interviews again!”

That is also great news for all Whedon fans as well, to finally be able to hear first hand from the famed creator of “Serenity” and to stay up-to-date on just what new cinematic surprises he has for us in the future.

Well I hope he get started on a new Serenity movie, to be honest I was never interested in a Wonder Woman movie. Firefly/Serenity should be his project now… just my thoughts.

I had high hopes for this movie. With this news, I hope that a) the project continues, and b) whoever ends up in control doesn’t screw it up.

At least it gives him some time to start working on a Serenity 2 script.

I like to think of this as an opportunity to work on other more important projects like Serenity 2: the Reaver Picnic

We all know he had Mason Rocket as first choice for WW, but like most I hope his next project is Serenity 2.

I was hoping to see Joss’s Wonder Woman. Oh well. I now have less confidence in the movie, but I expect I’ll see it anyway… unless it looks like the next Catwoman.

I’ve been missing Joss in my life, so I hope the next project gets rolling soon!

Yea, I was never interested in WW. I hope Joss goes in a new direction. As much as I loved Firefly and the movie, I just don’t think he get he will the studio support to make another one. I’d like to see him do some freelance work for BSG and the Dresden Files.

Note to self: Never trust Hollywood when they say “we’re just buying this script, that is the same topic as another script that we’ve comissioned, on spec.”

I was really hoping that Wonder Woman would rise Joss’s star, like Spider-Man did for Ted Raimi, and thus allow Joss more freedom in his projects (eg Serenity 2: The Wrath of Wash.)

Goners will be his next movie, which should be interesting. It’s an original script and all new characters, something Joss hasn’t done for a while. He’s been re-doing his own world or playing in other people’s worlds. So something fresh from him will be sweet.

I agree with everyone! It’s time to start on Serenity 2!

Damn. I almost snorted juice on my monitor.
