Writer-director Tyler Cornack talks about his horror-black comedy feature MERMAID, and how he intended it to be a very Florida story.
He talks about his desire to tell a Florida tale in a beach town, bringing together all the elements that at times make people shake their heads, saying “Florida”, and emphasizing the Florida-ness of the people around the protagonist Doug and the mermaid.
Tyler also talks about his ideas for the costume design of the mermaids, and how that enhanced the humor in the overall story beyond its relationship with Doug, and the amazing job Avery Potemri did as the main mermaid.
No news on any official soundtrack yet, but it should eventually appear on Spotify.
MERMAID (a 2025 SXSW Film Festival Official Selection) is in theaters April 8 from Utopia. Find tickets here: https://mermaid.utopia.film/
