DVD Review: “The Closer” The Complete Series The groundbreaking series is now in one set for all to enjoy

I was a fan of The Closer almost from Episode 1. In 2005, TNT launched a new police procedural with an almost fish-out-of-water scenario, where the lead is an experienced female investigator from the East Coast being dropped into a newly created, high profile investigative unit in the Los Angeles Police Department. She is the leader of the new team, and being given the rank of deputy chief with no previous experience at that level anywhere, especially not having made her bones in the LAPD, has created some friction with almost everyone she’s expected to work with in this new, slightly toxic sandbox.

TNT basically went all-in with their new “We Know Drama” tagline, and scored a hit.

I am happy that this set includes the bonus features from the individual season sets, which still seems to be an unpredictable situation where Warner Bros is concerned. Why Warner Bros Home Entertainment reproduces some “complete series” sets with all the bonus features from the old individual season sets, but not all is a question that doesn’t yet have an answer. I can make a guess… but it also doesn’t make sense. This DVD complete series set does not seem to be missing any of the bonus features from the original season sets. But the complete series blu-ray for Babylon 5 does not contain any of the bonus features included in the original DVD sets and the repackaged DVD sets. And I took that omission personally.

There do not seem to be any obvious picture or sound enhancements or restorations, and no mentions of any remasterings, so this set being available only on DVD seems to be a way for fans to find the entire series in one package, since the original individual season sets seem to vary in availability… nothing officially announced from the studio as being out of print, but the differences in availability on the primary market suggest otherwise. Used copies of the individual sets seem to be easily available on Amazon and eBay, for those who prefer the less-wieldy smaller packaging.

Even with the availability on the secondary markets of the individual sets, this Complete Series set appears to be priced lower ($65) than it would cost to track down each season separately. The series also does not appear to have ever been officially released on blu-ray, and the same for the Complete Series set for Major Crimes, the follow up series to The Closer that was also a hit for TNT.

I could probably do an entire essay or video on the shortcomings of both The Closer and the follow-up series, Major Crimes, because, in my opinion, while both series were engaging and entertaining, ultimately both shows failed their female leads in different but similarly devastating ways.

The Closer: The Complete Series DVD is available March 10 from Warner Bros Home Entertainment. All episodes also available digitally. As of April 2026, The Closer is available to stream on Peacock, Pluto TV, and for purchase on Prime Video.

The Closer: The Complete Series DVD

In this critically acclaimed series, Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick), a top-notch detective who puts Los Angeles’ most brutal killers behind bars. Using her Keen instincts and brilliant interrogation techniques, Brenda can close a case by eliciting a confession or cornering a suspect through sometimes-questionable methods. With her offbeat personality, tough-as-nails approach and track record as one of the country’s leading investigators, the no-nonsense boss of the LAPD’s elite Priority Homicide Division will keep you hooked through all seven seasons.

Revisit the groundbreaking series that won Kyra Sedgwick an Emmy Award for lead actress in a drama series and rewatch the finale that captivated nearly 10 million viewers, shattering records as the most-watched finale in basic cable history at the time—a television event fans will never forget.

Boasting an all-star ensemble including J.K. Simmons, Jon Tenney, G.W. Bailey, and Mary McDonnell, The Closer delivers powerhouse performances that bring authenticity and emotional depth to every twist and turn of its gripping storylines.
