Writer, editor and film critic Sheila O’Malley has written The Art and Making of Frankenstein from Insight Editions, a coffee table reference book for the new Netflix feature Frankenstein, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro.
She talks about spending time interviewing the del Toro, the cast and the production design team involved in the film, from designing the costumes to the details in the set designs and characters. The book includes detailed concept art, storyboards and candid set photos, along with descriptions and behind-the-scenes imagery for the props and accessories seen in the film.
Sheila also talks about the history of Mary Shelley, the writing of and the early reception of the novel, the impact of Boris Karloff’s 1931 performance, and how many adaptations focused on aspects of the story other than what she’d focused her writing on.

The book is available in a standard hardcover trade edition, a portfolio collector’s edition, and a numbered limited artifact edition that includes a Dark Angel replica statue and a medallion custom crafted by the film’s prop designer, a copy of Victor Frankenstein’s notebook, and a bound copy of Guillermo del Toro’s screenplay.
