Writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner talks about Beast of War, and since he’s always wanted to make a shark movie, he went with one in a historical World War II setting.
Loosely inspired by the sinking of the HMAS Armidale in 1942 off the coast of what is now East Timor, Kiah has always been fascinated by sharks and the movie JAWS, but didn’t want to just make a copy of JAWS for his first shark feature. He also talks about the challenges he faced by having a very static set on still water, with the character conflict coming from not just their personality conflicts but also the obstacles to them surviving their injuries and that darned shark.
Kiah also talks about the combined practical and digital design of his monster shark, and wanting something different for the look of his first shark beast. The use of practical effects for the monster is an important element for interacting in the water and with the actors.
