Eisner and Hugo Award winning comics writer Damian Duffy talks about the challenges of adapting the works of Octavia Butler to graphic novels. Parable of the Talents is the newest adaptation, following Kindred (2017) and the Hugo Award-winning Parable of the Sower (2020).

Damian talks about his and John Jennings’ appreciation for Octavia Butler’s stories and how being fans of Kindred brought them full circle to landing the project. He also breaks down their approach to writing and illustrating the Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents adaptations of these stories, and how to keep the impact of her words while still having to distill things down to fit the needs of the graphic novel format.

Damian also talks about why the first edition of Black Comix is out of print and considered rare/collectible now, and how that led to creating Black Comix Returns as a way to update and expand the volume. Then we sidetrack into the history of Black artists in the comics and comic book worlds, which points towards more rabbit holes.

Could there be other classic science fiction and fantasy adaptations in the future, by Damian and John, or spearheaded by other creative teams? There’s a rich history that could be waiting to be adapted.
