4K Review: “Dune: Prophecy” Season 1

4K Review: “Dune: Prophecy” Season 1

May 17, 2025 By Summer Brooks Leave a Comment

HBO’s hit series DUNE: PROPHECY is set in the same Dune universe that the Denis Villeneuve films are set, taking place about 10,000 years prior to the events of those movies. It follows a group called the Sisterhood, a group eventually becomes the Bene Gesserit… essentially that secretive group’s origin story.

The series is influenced by but not directly based on Sisterhood of Dune, first book in the Great Schools of Dune trilogy of books, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson (Sisterhood of Dune, Mentats of Dune, Navigators of Dune).

This 4K set is marvelous, because even though Season 1 was only 6 episodes, the amount of special features included are worthy of a Dune epic. There are over 90 minutes of featurettes and bonus content, all of which serve to deepen the history of the worlds and the lore of this age of the Dune universe so chronologically distant from the events of the movies which everyone is already so familiar with (the Villeneuve films, the Lynch film, and even the two Syfy Channel miniseries).

The content of the set consists of:

DISC 1
Episode 1: The Hidden Hand
Episode 2: Two Wolves

Features:
Behind the Veil: Entering the Dune Universe
Behind the Veil: Houses Divided
Inside Episode One
Inside Episode Two

DISC 2
Episode 3: Sisterhood Above All
Episode 4: Twice Born

Features:
Truth or Lie: Exploring how well the cast knows their Dune lore
Behind the Veil: Expanding the Universe
Inside Episode Three
Inside Episode Four

DISC 3
Episode 5: In Blood, Truth
Episode 6: The High-Handed Enemy

Features:
Behind the Veil:
* Envisioning the Future: Crafting the VFX (Extended)
* Power of Sound (Extended)
* Designing the Universe (Extended)
* Crafting the Costumes (Extended)
* Crafting the Hair and Makeup (Extended)
Behind the Veil: Building Worlds (Exclusive home video featurette)
Inside Episode Five
Inside Episode Six

The “Inside the Episode” breakdowns are slightly more than just “behind the scenes” features, and will sometimes show more insight behind some characters behaviors and decisions, as well as some commentary on the filming.

Curiously, there are more bonus features that are not included with this set. You can find them on HBO Max, in the Extras section for the series. Those are:

The Official Dune: Prophecy Podcast (6 episodes, approximately 1 hour each)
FYC Panel for Dune: Prophecy (44 minutes)
Set Tour with Chloe Lea
Get to Know: Sisterhood (extended cast questions from Truth or Lie roundtable)
Get to Know: Imperium (extended cast questions from Truth or Lie roundtable)
Behind the Veil: The Power of the Sisterhood
Set Tour with Chris Mason

I would love to know why the “The Power of the Sisterhood” featurette was not included on the discs. That would fit in with all the other “Behind the Veil” featurettes on the discs.

Each episode of the series has audio tracks in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Czech, with subtitles in English (for deaf/hard of hearing), French, German (for hard of hearing), Italian (for hard of hearing), Spanish, Dutch, Czech, Danish, Suomi (Finnish), Norwegian, and Swedish.

This is very likely the best sounding TV series 4K set I have yet come across. There is a rich quality that grabbed my attention from the start, and I’m 90% sure I didn’t hear that level of depth when originally watching the series on HBO. Starting to wonder if I should make sure I have 4K properly enabled on my HBO Max app now!

DUNE: PROPHECY has already been renewed for a Season 2, tentatively set to begin filming in August 2025 for release some time in 2026.

DUNE: PROPHECY: The Complete First Season Available May 13, 2025
Includes all 6 episodes from the first season, plus over an hour of bonus content including 5 extended featurettes and one all-new bonus feature exclusive to 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD.

DUNE: PROPHECY: The Complete First Season is also available now to purchase Digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, YouTube, Fandango at Home, and more.

From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, DUNE: PROPHECY follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. DUNE: PROPHECY is inspired by the novel SISTERHOOD OF DUNE, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

DUNE: PROPHECY stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, Yerin Ha, and Barbara Marten.
