We asked Monstrous Books owner & publisher James Aquilone a few questions about this (and future?) Kolchak adventures with classic monsters:
Q: Was having Carl meet the “classic monsters” always the first adventure for him on the drawing board?
The idea to have Carl meet the classic monsters had been running around in my head ever since I put together the 50th anniversary graphic novel. Carl is a monster hunter and these are the biggest monsters in history. It just made sense to put him in stories with Dracula and Frankenstein.
Q: How did the plan for him to encounter Dracula, Frankenstein and The Werewolf come about? Why were those classic monsters the first ones up?
This is the unholy trinity of monsters so they had to be first, in my opinion. But we’re going to do more volumes, so eventually we’ll get to all the others.
Q: Were the artists and writers that you approached for this project people you knew were Kolchak fans, and was that an element you were interested in or concerned about?
David Dastmalchian, Rodney Barnes, and Steve Niles have all been involved in my other Kolchak projects, and I definitely knew they were fans beforehand. It’s certainly easier to work with people who know the character well and are fans.
Q: What led to you writing the bonus story KOLCHAK MEETS KONGA?
I had an interesting idea for the story and thought it would be fun. “Kolchak Meets Konga” is a bit different from the others as it’s more satirical.
Q: Will three more classic monsters be up next? And could Kolchak end up meeting monsters from other cultures in future volumes?
Kolchak has met plenty of monsters from other cultures as he has in the TV series, like “Horror in the Heights,” “Zombie,” and “Legacy of Terror,” as well as the 50th anniversary graphic novel, where he faced monsters from Vietnam, Japan, and the Caribbean. In the upcoming Kolchak Eras anthology, we have a new story with Carl visiting the U.K. I love stories where Kolchak travels outside his normal environs, so you can definitely count on him meeting monsters from all over the world.
