“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”: New 4K 3D Version in AMC Theaters

August 24, 2017 By Summer Brooks Leave a Comment

Director James Cameron’s iconic sci-fi classic, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, returns to the big screen in 3D for the first time on August 25, presented by AMC Theatres (NYSE:AMC) and Distrib Films US. Converted in immersive 3D by Cameron himself, the groundbreaking masterpiece will screen exclusively at AMC locations throughout the United States during its first week back in theaters.

A worldwide box-office sensation, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY originally captivated moviegoers in 1991 with its revolutionary special effects and cutting-edge storytelling. This groundbreaking film took home four Academy Awards® including best sound, best sound effects editing, best visual effects and best makeup.

“TERMINATOR 2 has stood the test of time and is still hailed by critics as one of the best sci-fi movies in film history,” said Elizabeth Frank, Executive Vice President, Chief Content & Programming Officer, AMC Theatres. “Now, the newly restored version of the classic will take the already extraordinary special effects to a new level, and AMC is honored to give fans a newly immersive experience of a legendary film, as well as introduce the blockbuster to a new generation.”

“The 4K 3D restoration and conversion of the film looks stunning, and after 26 years the film hasn’t aged one little bit,” said François Scippa-Kohn, President and Partner at Distrib Films US. “AMC Theatres is the perfect fit for this release and a terrific opportunity for Distrib Films US and our partners Metal Rabbit Media, MPRM Communications and Kyle Thorpe PR to get the film in front of fans in a spectacular new way.”

About the 3D restoration

The project was initiated by Lightstorm (lei), James Cameron’s production company, DMG Entertainment and Studiocanal. James Cameron’s team oversaw this 3D conversion from start to finish. This highly experienced and award-winning team had already supervised Titanic’s 3D conversion and is currently working on the Avatar sequels.

The original 35mm negative was scanned and then restored in 4K at deluxe la, under the supervision of Geoff Burdick, Lightstorm. The film was calibrated in 4K by skip, James Cameron’s colorist, at Technicolor Hollywood, with a selection of the best 35mm prints from the film’s first release. The film was then converted into 3D by stereo d. (Star Wars, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World).

This work lasted almost a year and was daily monitored by Lightstorm’s teams, to produce a high-end 3d version at the level of the last 3D outputs from U.S. Studios. The 3D version then benefited from a calibration and a specific finish at Technicolor Hollywood, still under the supervision of skip and James Cameron himself.

Opens on Friday, August 25… Find a location near you to enjoy this 3D reissue of a scifi classic at amctheatres.com.
