Reality television shows have a variety of prizes from a cash payouts to a recording contract. But how about a trip into orbit?
That’s the goal of a new reality series that is being developed by NBC.
Reality show veteran Mark Burnett (he developed and produces Survivor and The Apprentice) has signed a deal with NBC and Virgin Galactic to develop Space Race. The show will follow contestants as they compete for a chance to win a flight into outer space on board Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo rocket plane.
“The scope of this endeavor is so staggering, that it took these two titans to even imagine it,” said NBC Entertainment president of alternative and late night programming Paul Telegdy. “The term ‘trip of a lifetime’ has for once been delivered on! This will be a remarkable experience for anyone who has looked at the night’s sky and dared to dream of space flight.”
Burnett has tried to send a winner into outer space before. A little over a decade ago, he developed a series called Destination Mir for NBC. The series would have seen the winner joining cosmonauts on board the Mir space station. However, it was grounded when the Mir space station was brought down in 2001.
