Top guns from Battlestar Galactica and Caprica will be reuniting to bring the Diana Gabaldon time travel book series to the small screen for the Starz premium network.
Ronald D. Moore and John Dahl (Breaking Bad, Dexter, Justified) will show-run “Outlander,” the story of a World War II M*A*S*H nurse named Claire Randall who is somehow transported to the year 1743. Totally out of her element Claire finds herself not only in unknown surroundings but in a world that causes immediate danger to her life. Already married in 1945, she is forced into an unwanted marriage to a 18th Century Scottish warrior and soon finds herself caught in a love triangle that could cost not only her life but the life of the man she is so passionately in love with.
Actors Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones) and Sam Heughan (Doctors) will co-star with an as yet unnamed female lead. Moore will executive produce with Jim Kohlberg. Dahl will direct the pilot and second episode of the 16 episode first series. Shooting begins this fall on location in Scotland.
“We are thrilled to be bringing ‘Outlander’ to Starz next year,” stated Starz CEO Christ Albrecht. “Diana has created an incredibly compelling heroine, thrust into a very complex world, not to mention, time. The books weave a fascinating tapestry of history, spirituality, love and honor, not to mention plenty of time travel, sex and warfare.”
Starz is quickly becoming one of the premiere networks for turning books into small screen adaptations and the creation of original programming, a prize once held exclusively by HBO.
Look for the series to debut on the Starz network in the fall of 2014.
