Eoin Colfer’s best-selling young adult series Artemis Fowl has been optioned for a big-screen adaptation, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The movie will adapt the first two novels in the series in what could be the first installment in a new cinema franchise.
According to Disney, Fowl is “about 12-year-old Artemis who is a millionaire, a genius — and above all, a criminal mastermind. But Artemis doesn’t know what he’s taken on when he kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit) to harness her magic to save his family. These aren’t the fairies of the bedtime stories — they’re dangerous.”
The long-awaited big screen adaptation has made unlikely allies of the Walt Disney Company and Harvey Weinstein in the role of producer. Weinstein and his brother Bob split with Disney several years ago and formed their own movie company. The rights to the Fowl series were purchased years ago by Miramax when the Weinsteins ran that studio.
Former Harry Potter screenwriter Michael Goldenberg will pen the script for the film.
