Upcoming Must See Sci-Fi Movies for 2013

July 13, 2013 By Sam Sloan Leave a Comment

The first project listed is a new film from Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Stargate SG1) and stars Academy Award winners Jodie Foster and Matt Damon. Set in the year 2154 the Earth is in ruins. The wealthiest have migrated to the orbiting space station Elysium where life is good, healthy, vibrant and beyond comprehension for those left on a completely depleted Earth below. Matt Damon takes on the task of trying to bring equality to these highly diverse and separated realities and with that comes a lot of sci-fi action and thrills. The movie co-stars William Fichtner (The Dark Knight), Sharlton Copley (District 9, Europa Report), Michael Shanks (Stargate SG1) and Faran Tahir (Star Trek, Warehouse 13)

“Elysium” opens in theaters on August 9, 2013.

“Riddick” will once again rise from the dead in this 2013 sequel to the very popular comic book and film series. Starring Vin Diesel in the title role this time he finds himself left for dead on a drought-ridden planet of scorching heat fighting his way through a race of predators and mercenaries out for bounty. This one has a great supporting cast with the return of Karl Urban (Star Trek: Into Darkness) reprising his role of Vaako, Raoul Trujillo, Bokeem Woodbine and most exciting is Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Dahl.

It will open in US and UK theaters on September 6, 2013.

A-List stars Laurence Fishburne (the Matrix, Event Horizon) and Bill Paxton (Aliens, Titanic) headline an international cast in director Jeff Renfroe’s (Being Human) taunt sci-fi thriller “The Colony.” Set in the not too distant future the world enters a new ice age forcing humanity underground to survive where a small band at an outpost come into contact with something more threatening than the cold and never ending snowfall.

Out in theaters on September 20, 2013 (disregard the April 2013 date in the trailer – film opening was postponed in post production until Sept.)

From writer/director/producer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: First Contact) comes a new sci-fi thriller series on the SyFy Channel called “Helix.” Centered around the investigation of a disease outbreak with geneticists concentrating on the double helix of human DNA for cause and cure. Tagline: Scientists Are About To Change The World….Or End It!

The series is scheduled to begin November 2013.

The final film is set in the 18th Century. “Seventh Son” stars Academy Award winners Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in a story about Master John Gregory, a Spook and his battle with uber-witch Mother Malkin (Moore). Getting older and in need of help Gregory takes on a young wizard apprentice Tom Ward, played by Ben Barnes. The film also stars Djimon Hounsou, Jason Scott Lee and Olivia Williams. Normally I would avoid this kind of film as the premise has been quite overused, however, since it stars Bridges you know it will be good. Also the fact that Matt Greenberg (1408, Reign of Fire, Prophecy II & The Invisible Man TV series) is one of the film’s writers makes it worth a viewing.

Look for it in theaters January 17, 2014.
