An extended cut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit Blu-Ray and DVD before the second installment hits theaters, says director Peter Jackson.
Jackson tells Empire: “We are putting things in the extended cut that are going to play straight into the second film.”
He explained that a character called Girion will be seen defending the city of Dale from Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Fans can also expect to see more dialog between the elves and dwarves – delving into why their relationship is so strained – as well as more footage of Middle-earth’s landscape, including Goblin Town and Hobbiton.
Producer Philippa Boyens said: “We always wanted to wend our way through Hobbiton, but in the end Bilbo has to run through the door.”
Finally, fellow producer Fran Walsh explained that another extra shows the Great Goblin (Barry Humphries) singing an extended version of his song.
Jackson quipped: “Barry Humphries is going to rise in the charts.”
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released on December 13.
Summer Brooks says
Is it wrong that as much as I enjoy the Lord of the Rings trilogy, that I have absolutely no interest in seeing The Hobbit trilogy, in either standard, extended, sped up, or any other edition?
I watched the “Everything that’s Wrong with The Hobbit in 4 Minutes or Less” video by CinemaSins, and was kinda glad I hadn’t gone to see it.
