The long-rumored sequel to Independence Day is one step closer to becoming a reality with the news that 20th Century Fox has circled July 3, 2015 as the day the film hits theaters.
While the studio hasn’t officially green lit the film yet, it’s probably only a matter of days until we get that news.
Producer Roland Emmerich says the upcoming movie will be a sequel to the hit film and not a “Will Smith movie.”
“I kinda told them I want to have the same feel again… and then that’s the problem,” Emmerich tells Hitfix.com. ” It has to be an ensemble cast again.”
The good news, so far, is that this doesn’t sound like it will be a reboot. But it’s been a long time since the original, making us wonder if the audience is still interested in the sequel or if this may be too little, too late.

I’m still interested in a sequel.

I hope not. I usually agree wioth Sam but on this one I do not. The first one was so sophmoric that it was not even a fun b movie to me. I may be in the minority but it was not enjoyable and the outcome predictable. I think this would be money better spen elsewhere but unfortunately sequels are still the rage. After the not so sucessful receny film of Will’s maybe they will not be so anxious—–

In this case, I think timing is everything. The perfect time for a sequel would have been at 5 years or 10 years after the original. Now, with everything else that’s come out since, they may have a tough time coming up with a scenario that maintains the fun of the original.
Notice I didn’t say plausibility. Any movie that has it’s own dedicated section in the Movie Cliches List cannot possibly expect any level of believability to be introduced into its sequel 🙂
I am curious to see what direction they take now, compared to the rumored direction being talked about right after the movie first came out, but a lot can happen in the next two years, so the time to get excited might be closer to Christmas 2014, when the first trailers would be stacked on to holiday films to get people talking.
