It was probably only a matter of time until Universal decided to reboot Timecop.
The studio gave the greenlight to a new version of the the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme time travel action movie.
Timecop was set in the near future where time travel is regulated by a police force. One officer runs afoul a crooked politician using time travel to further his political career.
It was based on a story published by Dark Horse Comics (the movie’s script was co-written by Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson) and was one of Van Damme’s most successful films, both financially and critically.
Timecop also proved to be a mini-franchise for the studio, spawning a short-lived 1997 TV series on ABC and a direct-to-DVD sequel with an all-new cast.
The studio is approaching the new Timecop as a reboot and a re-imagining of the concept and is out to writers. Van Damme is not involved.
I loved this movie. Have seen it more times than I can remember. It is ready for a reboot & in the right hands in the director’s & writer’s chair could make a great modern film with today’s movie technology. I would love to see Bruce Willis in the lead for the reboot, he’s still not too old for the action involved & he looks the part today as much as Van Damme did when it first came out. They would have to tune-up the married wife whose pregnant part a bit to account for Bruce’s age, but that is a minor obstacle any good adaptation writer can fix.
No way, you need someone brash, bold and younger to play the lead. Bruce could work as his boss (the Bruce McGill character), though, but what would be cool for a reboot is if that character was the older, more time-weary Max from the first movie who’s now running the division.
And would a reboot incorporate anything from the TV series or not?
That would work only the McGill part may not be big enough a role for Willis to take. I wonder who could fill that bill of a youngish, brash & bold lead? Perhaps Ian Somerhalder might work well.
