“Johnny Mnemonic” TV Series In the Works

“Johnny Mnemonic” TV Series In the Works

April 26, 2013 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Earlier today, we brought you news that Scream was in the running to come to your tv screens.   Now comes word that another 90’s movie could be adapted for television — Johnny Mnemonic.

The pilot is being developed for television, though a network isn’t yet attached to it.   According to Blastr, some of the creative minds behind the reboot worked on the TV version of Stargate and it comes from Prodigy, the studio that created Lost Girl.

So, there’s some hope there that it could turn out to be something interesting.

Based on a short story by sci-fi author William Gibson, the dystopian flick focused on a guy with a cybernetic brain implant, tasked with moving some highly sensitive data.

I liked the movie and see potential for a TV series of maybe 4-5 seasons. They’d have to drop the data transport (or have that be in the pilot) and focus on the world itself. The first story arc would be getting the cure for that one disease caused by technology out of corp hands and into the public. Then see what happens. Maybe someone else has a monopoly on an ingredient and that would have to be addressed.

I agree there is a lot of potential here, the short story is really more of a side story in the Necromancer/Count Zero universe so there is a lot of constructed world already to expand the short story into.

And while I did enjoy the movie (I know, I know) from what I recall it did deviate from the source story a lot. Which is fairly normal when expanding a short story to longer form.

The movie was fun to watch, I did like keanu reeves in the role, over a ted yes, but they they originally wanted to do it an a 1 million dollar art film. instead they got 30 million. There was also an issue with one of the characters in the original story that hey had to change because the option for the character was tied up in something else.
It will be difficult to expand a short story into a TV series,
