“Once Upon A Time” Spin-Off in Development

“Once Upon A Time” Spin-Off in Development

March 20, 2013 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

A spin-off of ABC’s Once Upon A Time in in development.

The spin-off will be set in Wonderland and give us a new look at the classic Alice in Wonderland story.

Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, producers of the original Once, will produce the new series and have brought in some TV veterans to help get the potential series up and running.  According to Deadline, Jane Espenson and Zack Estrin have been hired to help develop the show.

Espenson is a producer on Once and is familiar to readers from her work in the Mutant Enemy universes.  Estrin was a writer for Prison Break.

The spin-off is reportedly taking a page from FX’s American Horror Story and would tell a 13-episode story set in Wonderland and focusing on Alice.   Should the spin-off prove successful, a new fairy tale would be the focus of the second arc.

So, do you like the idea of a limited run spin-off from Once Upon A Time?

What really bugs me about this is that ABC passed on the Alice pilot that NBC eventually picked up to be shot. My guess is that they were looking for a franchise thing like with CSI and Law and Order…the problem…Once hasn’t been around long enough…even die hard Major Oncers have agreed on various forums that it’s too soon. And from what I’ve heard they want to use Jefferson from Once…except that they are going to recast the role because the original actor has been tied up on Broadway.

The idea for the NBC one sounded pretty good to me…a new heroine named Clara that has to battle the evil Queen in Wonderland who just happens to be the original Alice.
